O’Ward, a 24-year-old Mexican driver, is embarking on his fifth full season in the IndyCar series, all with Arrow McLaren. Throughout his time with the team, O’Ward has established himself as one of the top talents in the series, achieving four wins and reaching 20 podium finishes in 64 starts.
During the previous season, O’Ward finished fourth in the IndyCar series championship. He managed to secure seven podium finishes and accumulated enough points to qualify for a super license, which is a requirement to compete in Formula 1.
Expressing his excitement, O’Ward stated, “I am incredibly thrilled to finalize this deal with the team. I want to extend my gratitude to Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren, Gavin Ward, team principal of Arrow McLaren, the partners, and everyone involved in making this possible. It is especially significant that this agreement has been concluded before the start of the IndyCar season, allowing us to focus exclusively on racing and pursuing victory.”
O’Ward also expressed his pride in continuing to represent McLaren, saying, “McLaren has become my home, and I am proud to continue racing with the iconic papaya livery for at least a few more years.”
The 2024 IndyCar season will begin with a race on the streets of St. Petersburg on March 10. It will conclude with the Nashville Grand Prix on September 15. Consequently, during the final seven weekends of the 24-race season, O’Ward will serve as a reserve driver in Formula 1. (Reported by Steve Keating)
