Nyck de Vries Breaks Silence on Red Bull Pressure: “It Felt Like They Were Watching Me 24/7”

Former AlphaTauri (now VCARB) driver Nyck de Vries has finally opened up about the intense pressure, scrutiny, and suffocating atmosphere he endured during his short-lived Formula 1 stint in 2023.

Once seen as a promising talent, the Formula E champion was unceremoniously sacked mid-season, replaced by Daniel Ricciardo in a move that underscored Red Bull’s ruthless driver policy.

Now, de Vries has revealed the full extent of the pressure he faced, admitting that he felt like he was being monitored at all times—both internally and externally.

“You have the media and therefore the external pressure, but you also have the internal pressure.”

For de Vries, the AlphaTauri seat was a golden opportunity—but one that came with immense expectations. Unfortunately, as his struggles mounted, so did the scrutiny.

A Ruthless System: “It Felt Like They Were Watching Me 24/7”

While media speculation was relentless, de Vries insists the internal pressure at Red Bull was even greater.

“Wherever you go, it always feels like they’re watching you. I wouldn’t say it feels like they’re attacking you, but you do feel that 24/7 about writing and talking about you.”

His performances were analyzed under a microscope, and he knew that every move he made was being judged—whether it was on the track, in the paddock, or even behind closed doors.

“You move around in the paddock, in that ecosystem, and everyone knows about it. You can’t run away from it. Even if you wanted to, there is no way to escape.”

For a rookie driver trying to establish himself, this environment was brutal—and the relentless speculation about his future only made matters worse.

De Vries’ Downfall: The Red Bull Experiment That Failed

When Nyck de Vries made his debut in 2023, there were high expectations based on his impressive Formula E championship and standout F1 substitute drive for Williams in 2022.

But his start at AlphaTauri was rough:

🔹 Struggled to match teammate Yuki Tsunoda’s pace
🔹 No top-10 finishes in his first 10 races
🔹 Consistently underperformed in qualifying

By mid-season, Red Bull’s top brass had seen enough—and Helmut Marko pulled the trigger, replacing him with Daniel Ricciardo after just 10 races.

The move wasn’t surprising—but the sheer speed of his dismissal was brutal, even by Red Bull standards.

Making Peace With His F1 Dream: De Vries Finds Stability in Formula E

After his brutal exit from Formula 1, de Vries returned to his roots, signing with Mahindra Racing in Formula E.

While his F1 ambitions ended sooner than he hoped, he seems to have accepted his fate.

Currently sitting ninth in the Formula E standings, de Vries has rediscovered his footing, away from the ruthless intensity of the F1 paddock.

But his story serves as a stark reminder—talent alone isn’t enough in F1. If you can’t handle the pressure, you won’t last long—especially in Red Bull’s unforgiving system.

Final Take: De Vries Was Another Casualty of Red Bull’s Ruthless Approach

Nyck de Vries’ 2023 F1 stint was a cautionary tale—a talented driver thrown into a high-pressure environment and chewed up by Red Bull’s ruthless system.

🔹 Did he deserve more time? Maybe.
🔹 Did he struggle under the pressure? Absolutely.
🔹 Was his dismissal harsh? Definitely—but that’s F1.

At 30 years old, de Vries has likely closed the book on his F1 career—but his short-lived experience serves as another example of Red Bull’s no-mercy approach to driver development.

And in the end, not everyone survives the pressure.
