Number of road accidents increases in the first five months of 2024

 The Public Security Police (PSP) revealed that between January 1 and May 31, 22,708 road accidents were recorded, 234 more than in the same period in 2023.

These accidents resulted in 31 deaths, five less than last year, and 277 serious injuries, also five less compared to 2023. On the other hand, the number of minor injuries increased from 6,646 to 6,737.

In a statement, the PSP states that in terms of road enforcement, during the period under analysis, 10,485 operations were carried out, with 294,203 drivers being inspected.

A total of 80,419 offenses were recorded, which corresponds to an average of over 16,000 infractions per month. Of these, 13,301 were for speeding, which represents 16.5% of the total infractions.

The PSP also conducted 86,474 alcohol tests in the first five months, resulting in 1,451 fines for driving under the influence of alcohol.

In these road enforcement actions, the PSP counted 7,822 infractions for lack of mandatory periodic inspection, 2,497 for lack of third-party insurance, 2,092 for using a mobile phone while driving, 1,074 for not wearing a seatbelt, and 446 for not using child restraint systems (car seats).

“The PSP appeals to all drivers to drive safely, adapting their driving to weather conditions and the state of the road”, the statement adds.

Furthermore, the PSP recalls that “only with responsible and safe driving by all road users will it be possible to reduce accidents”, concluded.
