The 2025 Formula 1 season kicked off with a thrilling opening qualifier at the Australian Grand Prix. The McLaren duo, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, dominated the event, ensuring a front row lockout for their team. Despite Piastri’s initial lead, Norris managed a last-minute surge to claim pole position, leaving reigning champions Red Bull and their spearhead, Max Verstappen, trailing behind.
The Albert Park Circuit was bathed in sunlight as the season’s first qualifier got underway. Several drivers showcased their competitive prowess, vying for the coveted pole position. Third-time home player, Oscar Piastri of McLaren, led a closely contested third and final practice session, with mere fractions of seconds separating the top three.
However, Oliver Bearman’s run was marred with mishaps. The British driver was limited to only 14 laps after a major crash in FP1 caused him to miss FP2 and saw his Haas car lodged in the gravel in FP3. Despite the setback, Bearman attempted to join the race but soon reported issues with his Haas VF-25, forcing an untimely return to the pits.
The competition heated up as Norris set an impressive pace with his first lap, clocking in 0.450 seconds quicker than Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. The latter was closely followed by his teammate, Lewis Hamilton, with Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin and Jack Doohan of Alpine trailing behind. Piastri was 0.154s down on Norris’s record-setting time, while Red Bull, despite struggling in the opening practice sessions, saw Verstappen climb to second place by the end of FP3.
However, the qualifier was not without its share of surprises. Liam Lawson of Red Bull encountered challenges, locking up into Turn 3 and ending up in the gravel. With only five minutes left, Lawson, along with Nico Hulkenberg of Sauber, Pierre Gasly of Alpine, and the two Haas drivers, found themselves at the brink of elimination.
Lawson’s Red Bull debut turned sour as he overshot the penultimate corner during his last attempt, resulting in a disappointing Q1 exit. Gabriel Bortoleto’s last-minute lap also saw Mercedes’ Andrea Kimi Antonelli bumped to the 15th spot.
Despite these upsets, Norris upheld his lead over George Russell, who decided to switch from the Medium compound to Softs late in the game. However, Russell’s gamble paid off, allowing him to outpace Leclerc and Hamilton, as well as Alex Albon of Williams.
The second stage of the qualifier saw Verstappen pull ahead with the fastest lap, only to be overtaken by Piastri’s McLaren. Hamilton’s spin at Turn 11 jeopardized his advancement into Q3, while Fernando Alonso suffered floor damage to his AMR25. Despite these hurdles, Norris managed to lead a McLaren 1-2 finish in the second segment.
As the pole position shootout commenced, McLaren CEO Zak Brown predicted that up to six drivers could compete for the inaugural pole position in 2025. But a series of missteps by Piastri and Norris opened the door for competitors. Max Verstappen seized the opportunity, temporarily claiming the pole position, only to be outpaced by the McLaren duo once again.
By the end of the qualifier, Norris had secured pole position, followed by Piastri and Verstappen. Yuki Tsunoda and Alex Albon outperformed the Ferrari team, relegating Leclerc and Hamilton to seventh and eighth positions, with Gasly and Sainz rounding up the top 10.
The 2025 Australian Grand Prix qualifying session proved to be a dramatic curtain-raiser for the new Formula 1 season, setting high expectations for the races to follow.
