Lando Norris, British driver for McLaren, set the fastest time during the first practice session for the Australian Grand Prix of Formula 1. The session was interrupted by a significant accident involving Alex Albon. Norris completed a lap in 1:18.564s, narrowly beating world champion Max Verstappen by just 0.018s at the fast Albert Park circuit in sunny Melbourne. George Russell of Mercedes finished in third place, closely followed by Charles Leclerc of Ferrari, Yuki Tsunoda of RB, and Sergio Perez. The top six drivers were separated by just 0.078s. The session was halted due to Albon’s accident. He lost control of his Williams FW46 at Turn 6, resulting in excessive sliding and a collision with the circuit wall. The car then bounced off the concrete on the outside of Turn 7. Fortunately, Albon was able to walk away unscathed from the incident, but the car suffered significant damage. The session was paused while the debris was cleared. Several other drivers also faced incidents during the session, with the high-speed chicane at Turns 9/10 being the main culprit. Fernando Alonso went off track at Turn 10, leading Aston Martin to replace the floor of the AMR24. Russell went off track at Turn 9, and Valtteri Bottas spun his Sauber at the complex, returning to the pits with severely damaged tires. Verstappen also ran slightly off track at the chicane, abandoning a potentially fast lap. His teammate, Perez, had a minor incident after locking up the brakes at Turn 13. Lance Stroll of Aston Martin finished in seventh place, just a tenth of a second behind Norris, while Carlos Sainz of Ferrari returned to action after recovering from appendicitis and secured eighth place. Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes went through the grass at Turn 2 and hit the exit kerb at Turn 10, finishing in ninth place. Oscar Piastri completed the top 10 for McLaren in his home race.
