In preparation for the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League, Lando Norris expressed doubts about McLaren’s ability to win the sprint race of the Austrian Grand Prix. However, he admitted that his own mistake of leaving the door open cost him the opportunity to test if victory was within his reach.

Norris executed an impressive late braking maneuver on Max Verstappen at Turn 3, positioning his car perfectly to hinder Verstappen’s exit. This allowed Norris to get ahead on the straight. Initially, it seemed like he had successfully completed the overtaking move, as it would be extremely difficult for Verstappen to regain the lead on the outside of Turn 4, especially without the help of DRS.

However, to everyone’s surprise, Norris returned to the racing line approaching Turn 4, giving enough space for Verstappen to squeeze through on the inside and reclaim the first position. This mistake not only allowed Verstappen to regain the lead but also allowed Norris’ teammate, Oscar Piastri, to overtake him. Sensibly, Norris backed off on the inside at Turn 6 to avoid a collision.

On the sixth lap, Norris had a golden opportunity to take the lead, and he successfully executed the difficult part of the maneuver. Unfortunately, a basic error in his driving prevented him from capitalizing on his advantage. Norris acknowledged his mistake, referring to it as leaving the door open like an amateur.

The criticism of Norris, both self-imposed and from external sources, has sometimes been exaggerated in the past. He often chose not to engage in futile battles with drivers in faster cars to protect his own results. However, now that McLaren has the speed to fight for victories, Norris has demonstrated his willingness to fight. However, this particular mistake was a major blunder.

Norris concluded the overtaking maneuver flawlessly, and it was a brilliantly executed move. If he hadn’t given Verstappen the opportunity to regain the lead, there was a good chance he would have remained in first place. Instead, he had to settle for third place.

One of Norris’ strengths is his ability to self-criticize, and it is encouraging that he immediately recognized his rookie mistake. During the post-sprint press conference, he acknowledged the areas in which he needs to improve in order to consistently beat Verstappen.

Norris admitted that there is still room for improvement as a racing driver, but he refused to use that as an excuse for his performance. He emphasized that the crucial moment was Turn 4 and that if he had defended his position and not left the door open, the result would have been different. He acknowledged that there were missed opportunities and mistakes that he now realizes were foolish. However, he assured that he is giving his best on the track and is not overly concerned with external opinions. He is aware of his shortcomings and is committed to improving.

It is natural for Norris to focus on the minor negative aspects of his performance and McLaren’s performance, as this period of constant struggle at the front will only enhance his already impressive skills. This mistake serves as a valuable lesson that he must learn if he wants to achieve his immense potential and become a future world champion. After all, in a tight championship battle, such mistakes can result in a significant points turnaround against Norris in a full points race.

The positive news for Norris is that he is a quick learner and will have the opportunity to apply his new knowledge in the Sunday Grand Prix.
