Lando Norris is eager for the opportunity to face Max Verstappen in the Spanish Grand Prix. The McLaren driver is excited for the thrilling battle with the reigning champion as they compete for victory in the Formula 1 race. Verstappen initially secured pole position in Barcelona, but Norris managed to surpass him by just 0.020 seconds with a flawless lap. This will be Norris’ first time starting at the front of the grid since McLaren became a formidable contender. Despite the challenge of having Verstappen right behind him, Norris is thrilled for the rare chance to compete against the Dutch driver. When asked about the prospect of a duel with Verstappen, Norris expressed his hope for a good start and the ability to maintain control throughout the race. However, he acknowledged that he will be under pressure and will need to make crucial decisions. Regardless, Norris is excited for the race and is thrilled to finally have the opportunity to compete against Verstappen, with whom he has had limited racing experience in the past. He is prepared for a fierce fight, whether leading or trailing at the start, and is excited to finally have the chance to compete on equal terms with Verstappen.
However, with less than four tenths separating the top six drivers on the time sheets, Norris is aware that he and Verstappen may not be the only ones fighting for victory.
“I have no concerns,” he added. “I am excited. The descent into turn 1 is quite long and starting from pole is not necessarily advantageous.
“This is an opportunity for us to go out there and try to win the race. We haven’t done many long runs, but we have done some, and I think we have been competitive as always.
“I don’t believe that tomorrow’s race will be dominated by a car that is significantly faster than the rest. Between Mercedes, ourselves, Red Bull, and Ferrari, there are eight cars that could potentially have qualified on pole and have a chance of winning the race.”
“It all comes down to minimizing mistakes, just like today, and executing another solid race as we usually do.”
Meanwhile, Verstappen indicated that he will prioritize the bigger picture in his battle with Norris, as he believes tire management will be crucial.
“Naturally, I want to win tomorrow,” he said. “But we are still uncertain about our pure pace on long runs.
“I hope it will be a tight race, as it has been in recent events. With high tire degradation on this track, it is important to take good care of the tires.
“I am also uncertain about the track conditions tomorrow, considering the possible rain overnight and in the morning. All these factors come into play.”
