Plastic found in the front suspension of Logan Sargeant’s (USA) Williams Racing FW46 during qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix on May 25, 2024. This incident occurred during the Formula 1 World Championship, Round 8, in Monte Carlo.
Lando Norris has asked Formula 1 to find a “better solution” for the advertising stickers that have been causing issues at the Monaco Grand Prix. Norris, along with two other drivers, had problems with advertising banners on the streets of Monte Carlo coming loose and getting stuck under their cars. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who secured pole position, and Williams’ Logan Sargeant were also affected by this issue during qualifying.
Norris encountered the problem at Mirabeau, which nearly prevented him from advancing from Q1 as he was in danger of being eliminated in the final minutes of the session. Although he managed to progress with a second attempt, the British driver was frustrated because using a set of soft tires meant he only had one shot with new tires in Q3.
“I had to come into the pits to remove it. This shouldn’t happen in Formula 1,” Norris stated.
“In my opinion, it’s a bit silly. We predicted this would happen yesterday, and they claimed they would fix it, but obviously it wasn’t resolved.
“It’s unfortunate to have to rely on luck. I was lucky to have enough time; otherwise, it would have ruined my qualifying and my whole weekend.”
Norris criticized the situation as “unacceptable” and hopes it will be a controversial topic of discussion after the race unless it is resolved overnight.
“There’s nothing I can do,” Norris said. “Right now, it can only ruin your race.”
“They need to find a more effective solution than just using stickers, considering that we are scraping the wall and dealing with all these factors.
“But it’s not acceptable for this to ruin your whole weekend just because of a few stickers and similar things. They need to find a better solution.”
Despite his frustrations, Norris finished fourth overall, but lamented his difficulties during the weekend in Turns 3 and 4 compared to his teammate Oscar Piastri, who secured second place.
“I always struggled a bit in Turns 3 and 4 throughout the weekend, and it was getting closer, but it was the only place where I lost time to Oscar.
“I lost 0.15 seconds there, and it’s frustrating because it’s a significant difference. I made a mistake at the time and didn’t have a good exit lap.
“I’m not using that as an excuse, but I’m not strong enough in Turns 3 and 4, and that was basically the only place where I lost to Oscar on the entire track.
“It was 0.1 or 0.15 seconds, and on this circuit, that translates to two positions at the end. So yes, it’s a bit frustrating and I’m disappointed with that.
“Sometimes these things happen, so as much as I want to blame myself, the rest of the lap was good, so I’m satisfied with that.”
