Nissan seems willing to invest in a 100% electric vehicle built on the same platform that will serve as the basis for the new Renault Twingo.
According to “Automotive News Europe,” Renault’s electric vehicle business unit, Ampere, is set to “explore the development” of a fully electric city model for the Japanese brand.
If Nissan confirms this intention, the future electric model will be the second produced and developed by the Alliance partners, as in 2025, Ampere will build the fully electric successor to the small Micra based on the Renault 5.
It is worth noting that in addition to Nissan, Ampere will also produce a new compact SUV for Mitsubishi, another partner of Renault in the Alliance.
This new opportunity demonstrates Ampere’s strong position as a technological platform for major brands: the Alpine A390 was developed based on the AmpR Medium platform, while the A290 is based on the AmpR Small platform. Additionally, there is the successor to the Nissan Micra in 2025, as well as the electric potential aimed at segment A, and the upcoming Mitsubishi SUV for segment C developed on the AmpR Medium platform, which will be manufactured at the Douai production facility in France in 2025.
“We designed Ampere to provide a unique technology and customer experience, to place us on par with the best in record time. The significant advancements achieved by Ampere in just one year demonstrate that it is undoubtedly the most well-founded response from the European automotive industry to the new competitors that have emerged from the East and the West. We are making a difference, and our goal is to be leaders in Europe and beyond”, said Luca de Meo, CEO of the Renault Group and Ampere.
