The Nissan factory in Sunderland, UK, will start using new engines from JATCO in 2026, after the latter inaugurated a new production unit that will produce a powertrain group.
The new production unit, which has created up to 183 jobs, will produce electrified powertrain groups for the neighboring Nissan factory. Initially, it will be the 3-in-1 powertrain group that modularizes and integrates the engine, inverter, and reducer, making them smaller and lighter.
JATCO, a manufacturer of automotive transmissions based in Japan, has supplied over 129 million automatic transmissions to the global automotive market since its establishment in 1970.
The company has held the largest share of CVTs worldwide since 2008 and expects to reach a production capacity of 340,000 units at its Sunderland factory.
“We have had a long and fruitful partnership with Nissan, and we are very pleased to bring the manufacturing of our 3-in-1 powertrain group to the UK. This will be our fourth country to have an overseas production facility, with other locations in Mexico, China, and Thailand”, said Tomoyoshi Sato, CEO of JATCO.
