Antonio Fuoco from Italy, Miguel Molina from Spain, and Nicklas Nielsen from Denmark are the drivers of the Ferrari AF Corse #50, specifically the Ferrari 499P. On June 12, 2024, the fourth round of the FIA World Endurance Championship took place at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in Le Mans, France. This event consisted of training and qualifying sessions. During the first two hours of the race, Nicklas Nielsen, the driver of the Ferrari 499P #50, managed to secure the lead position. In the second hour, Neel Jani had to make a quick stop with his Porsche Competition 963 #99 from Proton due to a problem with the door latch. This issue had also occurred in the previous round of the FIA World Endurance Championship at Spa-Francorchamps. There was an investigation into a contact incident between Paul di Resta in the Peugeot 9X8 #94 and Edoardo Mortara in the Lamborghini SC63 #63 at the second Mulsanne chicane. Charles Milesi in the Alpine A424 #35 made a great effort while fighting for fifth place with Sebastien Bourdais in the Cadillac V-Series.R #3. However, Milesi accidentally cut the first chicane while trying to overtake Bourdais.
The Ferrari AF Corse 499P #50 attracted the attention of the race control and the Ferrari team manager was summoned. The reason for this summons may be related to the car’s oil leak or for not correctly timing their 10-second stop penalty, which they had already served in the first hour of the race. The rain started to fall heavily at the Porsche corner, but most of the 13.626 km of the track remained dry. An exciting battle for the lead unfolded between the AF Corse Ferrari #83, driven by Robert Kubica, and the Ferrari #50, driven by Nicklas Nielsen. Kubica defended his position at the Mulsanne corner, but had a slower exit, allowing Nielsen to take the lead. The two drivers were side by side at Indianapolis, but Kubica’s late braking technique helped him regain the lead. Eventually, Nielsen overtook Kubica at the first chicane.
In third place was Michael Christensen in the Porsche Penske #5, followed by the Lamborghini Iron Lynx SC63s with Andrea Caldarelli in car #19 ahead of Edoardo Mortara in car #63. Malthe Jakobsen in the LMP2 class made a great maneuver by overtaking Oliver Jarvis in the United Autosports Oreca 07 #22 for third place, although they later swapped positions again. The Cool Racing Oreca #47 of Naveen Rao and the AF Corse Ferrari 296 #54 of Thomas Flohr had a contact incident at the entrance of the Porsche corner, resulting in both cars spinning halfway. However, they managed to continue and Flohr was subsequently penalized with a drive-through penalty for his responsibility in the incident.
As the rain intensified and then dried up, the Vector Sport’s Oreca 07 #10, driven by Patrick Pilet, led the race, followed by Vladislav Lomko in the Inter Europol Competition’s Oreca #34 and Kyffin Simpson in the Nielsen Racing’s Oreca #24. Ritomo Miyata in the Cool Racing’s Oreca #37 was in fourth place, with PJ Hyett in the AO Racing by TF’s Oreca #14 ‘Spike the Dragon’ right behind. In the LMGT3 class, the new Ford Mustang had a strong debut with Ben Barker and Dennis Olsen driving the Proton #77 and #88 respectively, in second and fourth positions. Satoshi Hoshino, who will retire after this edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, received a pit lane penalty for an infraction in the slow zone. Many drivers chose to use slick tires, despite the intermittent wet and dry areas on the track.
Larry ten Voorde led the LMGT3 class in the JMW Motorsport’s Ferrari 296 #66, followed by Esteban Masson in the Akoddis ASP’s Lexus RC F #87 and Ahmed Al Harthy in the Team WRT’s BMW M4 #46. The Proton’s Ford Mustang #77 driven by Ryan Hardwick was in fourth place, with Morris Schuring in the Manthey EMA’s Porsche 911 #91 completing the top five positions.
