VW is defining the naming strategy for its models, announcing the transfer of the family designations of combustion engine models to its fully electric ID family.
In this way, the German brand will transfer the more traditional names, such as Golf, Tiguan, or Passat, to its electric models with each new generation. At the same time, all vehicles with conventional propulsion will continue to be marketed under their current names.
With this strategy, VW unites the worlds of electric and combustion engines, providing customers with intuitive guidance through the brand’s product portfolio in the future.
Thus, the designation of the electric model family, known by the ID prefix, will not disappear, but from now on, the German manufacturer will add a familiar designation to it.
As part of the new naming strategy for two models, VW announced that the ID.2 will now be called the ID.Polo, followed by the ID.Cross, an electric crossover that will replace the T-Cross.
“The names of our models are firmly rooted in people’s minds. They represent a strong brand and embody characteristics such as quality, timeless design, and technologies for all. That is why we are taking our traditional names into the future. The ID. Polo is just the beginning,” said Thomas Schäfer, CEO of VW.
The brand also announced that the new ID.Polo and the ID.Polo GTI will be presented next week at the Munich Motor Show, still with traditional camouflage, as well as the ID.Cross concept, which anticipates the production version that will be launched at the end of 2026.
