In a change from previous F1 games, EA and Codemasters have made a deliberate effort to prioritize their core player base in this year’s title, F1 24. The game has undergone significant changes and improvements, which can be categorized into three distinct groups. One of the most anticipated changes is the overhaul of the driver career mode, which now offers a deeper and more distinct experience compared to previous iterations. The career mode now starts with a scene of the player’s driver and their agent signing their first contract in Monaco, introducing a new and enhanced contract negotiation system. As a driver, your overall rating is crucial, and teams expect improvement throughout your contract. Improving your rating is relatively easy as long as you achieve reasonable results for your car’s pace. However, some players may find the lack of challenge in maintaining their position in F1 unrealistic and question the authenticity of being a Formula 1 driver.
EA and Codemasters have also introduced “secret meetings” in the driver career mode, where players can be approached by other teams to discuss possible changes. However, in our experience, these meetings occurred very early in our F1 career, even before scoring a point in the championship. The negotiation process itself is realistic but can be time-consuming, potentially lasting weeks or months. While this reflects real F1 negotiations, it may not accurately reflect the pace of the game. The absence of the ability to initiate secret meetings with other teams is another significant omission. It remains to be seen how these negotiations will be concluded, as we have only completed half of a season in the career mode.
It is important to note that many of these changes are exclusive to the driver career mode, while the My Team mode remains largely unchanged from F1 23. Another significant change in F1 24 is the car physics and simulation, which have been improved to provide a more accessible driving experience. Compared to F1 23, there is now more rear grip, making it easier to control the car without traction control assistance. However, some players using a wheel and pedal set have criticized the physics for feeling artificial and favoring controller users.
Other minor adjustments in F1 24 include updates to track models, with Silverstone, Spa, Jeddah, and Lusail receiving attention. Additionally, real F1 drivers provide feedback on their performance using real radio conversation excerpts, adding a realistic touch to the game. The inclusion of engine braking as an adjustable car setting option and the challenge career mode, which offers condensed career mode experiences with race objectives, are also welcome additions.
The final question is whether F1 24 justifies its price, starting from £69.99 for consoles. For career mode enthusiasts, there are certainly enticing features to explore. However, the driving control model remains a crucial factor that can make the overall gaming experience either good or bad. Although improvements have been made to address initial criticisms, this ultimately depends on the player’s preference for a more forgiving driving control model. Overall, F1 24 is likely to appeal to players using a controller, seeking an accessible gaming experience, and primarily engaging with the driver career mode.
