Anything like 1,604,000 cars were sold in September in China in the category of so-called New Energy Vehicles (NEV), which includes fully electric models and those powered by plug-in hybrid engines. A new record in this domain in the largest car market in the world, not only in absolute terms but also regarding its market share, which is practically half of the total (46.7%).
According to the numbers provided by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, in September 2025, 100% electric vehicles accounted for more than half of NEV sales (1,058,000 units), resulting from a demand increase of 36.4% compared to the same month in 2024, and 16.5% compared to August. Overall, NEV sales grew by 24.6% compared to September 2024, and 15% compared to last August. Also, regarding exports, the “weight” of NEVs is increasingly significant: 222,000 units shipped to markets outside China, nearly double that of September 2024.
