Villeneuve vs Schumacher: The Series
Consider this as a possible script: VILLENEUVE VS SCHUMACHER: THE SERIES. The story takes place after the tragic death of the King of Formula 1, Ayrton Senna. Schumacher, who was seen as the rightful successor, took the throne. Senna died on May 1, 1994. On November 13, the German driver from Benetton became World Champion for the first time. He achieved this feat again in 1995 with the same team, which later became Renault.
In 1996, Schumacher made the move to Ferrari in search of greatness alongside the legendary Formula 1 team. However, during this period, Williams was a dominant force and reached the peak of their success. They propelled Damon Hill to the F1 title in 1996.
Meanwhile, within the walls of Maranello, Schumi navigated the complex world of politics. Canadian driver Jacques Villeneuve, son of beloved Ferrari driver Gilles Villeneuve, emerged on the F1 scene in 1996 after an impressive career in Indycar. In 1997, Villeneuve emerged as a serious contender for the F1 title after Hill left the team to make way for highly regarded Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
Therefore, in his second year with Williams, Villeneuve, who was only 26 at the time, became the driving force behind his quest for the F1 title. In contrast, history showed that Frentzen did not live up to the expectations that preceded his arrival at the team.
With Ferrari consistently (though slowly) improving under the guidance of Jean Todt, and with Ross Brawn and Rory Byrne alongside Schumi, the pressure on the Scuderia was immense. The expectation of success at any cost was undeniable.
The stress and anticipation led Schumacher to get involved in the dark arts of racing, resulting in an intense season full of controversies and petty conflicts that created some of the sport’s most controversial moments.
The intensity and pressure were so overwhelming that, even after all these years, and with Michael’s absence from the spotlight for a decade, Villeneuve has not forgotten. Who better to remember those tumultuous days, full of potential for a Netflix series, than Jacques himself, now 52 years old?
In an interview facilitated by the BetIdeas media team, Villeneuve reflected on key moments during their time together in F1 and their “relationship” with Schumacher. Honest as always, he admitted: “We never had one!”
“I had some incredible connections in racing and formed very close friendships, but he and I never had that. It’s a shame because he is arguably one of the greatest. I can’t say for sure if we would have gotten along, as our personalities were very different. We will never know.”
Villeneuve recalled his arrival on the scene, stating: “When I entered F1, he joined Ferrari. I was hailed as the next big thing, perhaps unfairly, partly due to my father’s history with the team. I believe there was some animosity there that did not contribute to a positive relationship.”
“Michael was not used to being defeated or overtaken. The tension started when I overtook him on the outside at Estoril, on the last corner of 1996. That certainly didn’t improve our relationship,” Villeneuve recalled.
In fact, that maneuver on the outside of the long, fast right turn leading to the main straight at Estoril is a popular video on YouTube. Villeneuve was a rookie in Formula 1, while Schumacher was a two-time Formula 1 world champion at the time.
Villeneuve then explained more about the ongoing conflict: “He was the driver to beat because you knew you needed to catch him off guard and execute something extraordinary to surpass him, something that you probably could never replicate, a once-in-a-lifetime move that you had to try.
“Competing against him, even though it was frustrating and we got angry at each other, the satisfaction of surpassing him and winning the world championship was simply incredible,” admitted Villeneuve, who achieved victory in eleven Grand Prix races.
However, that was not the end of their rivalry. The hostility between Schumacher and Villeneuve grew the following year, as did the political tactics: “Before that, there was another incident in Hockenheim. A few races before the end, he was nine points behind me before I was disqualified in Suzuka. That gave him the lead. I’m sure of his mindset.
“So it turned into a political battle and mind games before the race. A significant part of that final race happened even before it started! It involved me ensuring through the media that everyone was aware of what had happened with Hill and how he had won the championship against Damon. This forced the FIA to consider that if something unpleasant happened, the driver would be disqualified.”
The Canadian driver continued: “That action alone planted uncertainty in Schumacher’s mind, making him realize that he couldn’t assume he could take me out without consequences. And then, it happened. I caught him off guard. When you’re racing with all this psychological warfare going on, it restricts your freedom on the track. He ended up in the gravel. You can watch the video on YouTube here>>>
“That’s what contributed to the success of that overtaking maneuver. I had a second to make a decision. I had already decided when I came out of the previous corner that it was now or never, considering the condition of the tires. I knew I had to come out of that corner just one meter closer to him than on any other lap. I could assess how deep he was braking, and each time I was getting closer to his gearbox.
“I thought to myself, if I could get just one meter closer on the straight, I could benefit from a bit of slipstream and then could surprise him with a sudden and unexpected move. He wouldn’t anticipate or see me because I was too far in his rearview mirror. That’s why I didn’t make my move until he started braking. He never saw it coming. It was a last-second decision. It was the championship or nothing. So why not go for it? Why settle for second place?
“It wasn’t my intention to take him out. In fact, I did everything in my power to stay on track and make the turn, which I managed to do in the end. It was the best move I ever made in my racing career! What brought me immense joy was when Valentino Rossi, while racing in Jerez, went to that exact spot and kissed the ground. It was an emotional moment.
“Schumacher’s team had already produced baseball caps with the number one and three stars on them (symbolizing his third world championship), and Eddie Irvine ended up finding one. He paraded around the paddock wearing it!” Villeneuve recalled, reflecting on his most memorable year.
The showdown in Jerez ended with Schumacher in the gravel and Villeneuve in third place, thus becoming the F1 World Champion of 1997. Schumacher faced penalties from the FIA for his involvement in the incident but still retained his five Grand Prix victories. However, he was stripped of his second position in the final championship standings.
But there was more to the story, as Jacques revealed: “After the main celebration, some of us from my group started playing with plastic trash can lids in the hotel reception area. The bar was closed at the time. Eventually, someone gave us the keys to the bar, and I ended up serving drinks to my friends behind the counter.
“Michael arrived with his wife, both wearing disguises. He had a blond wig on, while I had dyed my hair white with peroxide. The wigs were provided by Renault. Michael approached the bar with a smile and joined me in serving drinks. I thought, ‘Okay, we can move on now. The championship is over.’
“The problem arose when photos were published in a German magazine and in the newspapers the following week. Michael was saying, ‘Look, there are no problems. I didn’t do anything wrong. Jacques and I are friends, and he’s not angry with me.’
“That ruined any potential for a relationship. That was my moment, and he shouldn’t have used it for his own benefit. He only went to the party to ensure he could claim that moment. I didn’t appreciate that. From that point on, we never spoke again,” Villeneuve admitted.
While Schumacher remains reclusive and hidden from the public eye, in an unknown state of consciousness, this rivalry with Villeneuve will always remain unresolved. The anger of unfinished business still persists. It was one of the few negative incidents in a remarkable career that the seven-time F1 world champion and legend enjoyed at the top of racing.
Without the near-fatal skiing accident that altered his life, where would Schumacher be today?
Villeneuve pondered: “I’m not sure. When he first left F1, he stepped away and focused on riding motorcycles. So, would he be present in the paddock if he hadn’t had his accident? Or would he have preferred something different and let his son shine without overshadowing him?
“We have no idea how involved he would have been. It would be great if he were present. But no one talks about it. They kept everything very secretive,” Villeneuve lamented about his former rival.
Unfortunately, this story will not find a conclusion until Michael shares his side of the story, which is unlikely to happen. The end.
