NASCAR’s Global Push: Will Road Courses Lead the Way or Alienate Traditional Fans?

NASCAR is going global—whether fans like it or not. The sport has inked multi-billion-dollar media deals, introduced Next-Gen cars built for road courses, and now has a Cup Series race in Mexico City at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

While IndyCar and Formula 1 have long established their presence on the international stage, NASCAR has remained largely an American tradition. But that may be changing fast—thanks in part to Shane van Gisbergen (SVG), the road course specialist who has shaken up the series.

SVG’s Impact: NASCAR’s Road Course Revolution?

Ever since SVG stunned the world with his 2023 win at the Chicago Street Race, NASCAR has seen a renewed focus on road courses. His dominance in Xfinity (three road course wins in 2024) has proven that international talent can thrive in stock car racing, making it clear that NASCAR has a path to global expansion through road courses.

Even Dale Earnhardt Jr.—a self-proclaimed road course skeptic—admits that NASCAR’s best shot at worldwide success lies in road course racing.

“For NASCAR to achieve this idea of becoming more international, it’s got to happen on the road courses. I just don’t see any other route.” – Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Though Earnhardt Jr. personally prefers short tracks and superspeedways, he acknowledges that the fans will dictate the sport’s direction. And if global audiences want road courses, NASCAR may have no choice but to adapt.

Road Courses: A Necessary Evolution or a Betrayal of Tradition?

✅ Why Road Courses Are NASCAR’s Global Key
🔹 Ovals Are Rare Outside the U.S. – Unlike America, most countries don’t have high-banked superspeedways.
🔹 World-Class Road Courses Already Exist – Tracks like Silverstone, Suzuka, and Spa are ready to host NASCAR today.
🔹 Road Racing Expands NASCAR’s Audience – Formula 1’s global success proves that there is demand for elite road course racing.

❌ Why Traditional Fans May Feel Left Behind
🔹 Oval Racing Is NASCAR’s DNA – Daytona, Talladega, and Charlotte are the heart of the sport.
🔹 Too Many Road Courses Could Change the Identity – Adding too many could make NASCAR feel like a Formula 1 clone.
🔹 Drivers Like Earnhardt Jr. Struggled on Road Courses – The old-school stock car approach was built around speedway dominance.

Debate: Should NASCAR Fully Embrace Road Courses?

📢 Yes, It’s the Future!
🔥 SVG proved road course racing belongs in NASCAR
🔥 International expansion means road courses are necessary
🔥 Formula 1 has dominated globally—NASCAR can do the same

🚫 No, NASCAR Needs to Stick to Ovals!
❌ NASCAR is about high-speed, close-pack oval racing
❌ Adding more road courses could alienate hardcore fans
❌ Short tracks and superspeedways are where the real action happens

What Do You Think?

Is NASCAR making the right move by focusing on road courses, or is it losing what made it special? Let’s hear your take!
