As the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season gears up, the sport finds itself at a critical crossroads—not on the track, but in the boardroom. The future of Sunoco’s long-standing partnership as the official fuel supplier is uncertain, with no extension in place beyond 2025. If no deal is reached, NASCAR could be forced to seek a new fuel partner, shaking up a key element of stock car racing’s ecosystem.

Sunoco’s Uncertain Future in NASCAR

Sunoco has been NASCAR’s official fuel supplier since 2004, taking over from ConocoPhillips 76. Over the last two decades, the brand has become synonymous with high-performance fuel in all three national series—the Cup Series, Xfinity Series, and Truck Series. However, NASCAR’s deal with Sunoco is set to expire after the 2025 season, and so far, no agreement has been reached for an extension.

Sources suggest that NASCAR is already exploring alternative fuel suppliers, raising speculation about a potential major shakeup.

Steve Phelps Addresses NASCAR’s Fuel Future

NASCAR President Steve Phelps recently shed light on the sport’s broader strategy in a conversation with Sports Business Journal, addressing key topics such as NASCAR’s powertrain, fuel strategy, and vehicle development.

“What’s the (future) power plant going to look like? What’s the fuel going to look like? What is the body style going to look like? How do we differentiate the series? All those things we are working with our (original equipment) partners on today,” said Phelps.

This statement signals that NASCAR is evaluating its long-term fuel strategy, including hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles, aligning with global trends in motorsports.

Sunoco Expands Elsewhere, NASCAR Explores New Options

Sunoco appears to be diversifying its motorsports presence rather than committing solely to NASCAR. The company has recently:

✅ Entered Formula 1 through a sponsorship deal with Stake F1 Team.
✅ Backed NASCAR Truck Series driver Toni Breidinger with personal sponsorship.
✅ Invested in former driver Kenny Wallace’s social media content to expand its brand outreach.

These moves suggest a shift in Sunoco’s priorities, potentially explaining why negotiations with NASCAR have stalled.

If Sunoco ultimately walks away, NASCAR has several potential fuel partners, including:

🏁 ExxonMobil – A longtime racing supporter, working with various motorsport organizations.
🏁 Shell-Pennzoil – The current fuel supplier for IndyCar and a major presence in NASCAR.
🏁 VP Racing Fuels – Already the official fuel supplier for NASCAR’s IMSA sports car series.

With hybrid and electric powertrains gaining traction in motorsports, NASCAR may also be looking for a supplier that aligns with its evolving vision.

Could NASCAR Introduce Hybrid or Electric Racing?

Rumors have been swirling about NASCAR’s potential entry into electric racing, especially after the unveiling of a prototype EV stock car in 2023. NASCAR has been testing alternative energy solutions, with Ford recently unveiling an electric Mustang Mach-E prototype featuring:

🔋 78.0 kWh battery
🔋 Three-motor setup producing over 1,500 horsepower
🔋 Carbon fiber body panels for reduced weight

While an all-electric NASCAR Cup Series remains unlikely in the near future, the sport could transition to hybrid or alternative-fuel vehicles sooner than expected.

One possibility is that NASCAR is waiting for a serious alternative fuel solution before locking in a long-term contract. This could explain the delays in securing a new fuel supplier.

The Search for a Fourth Manufacturer: Another Factor in Play?

Alongside fuel concerns, NASCAR has been aggressively pursuing a fourth manufacturer to join Chevrolet, Ford, and Toyota. Adding a new OEM could dramatically shift NASCAR’s fuel and powertrain landscape, requiring flexibility in fuel agreements to accommodate a new automaker’s needs.

Could NASCAR’s next manufacturer push for alternative fuel sources? It’s a possibility. With global car brands prioritizing hybrid and electric technologies, a new OEM might influence NASCAR’s decision on future fuel partnerships.

The Road Ahead: Will Sunoco Stay, or Is a Shakeup Inevitable?

The clock is ticking. With the 2025 season being Sunoco’s last guaranteed year, NASCAR must finalize its fuel strategy soon. If no deal is reached, we could see:

⚡ A new fuel supplier entering the sport in 2026.
⚡ Hybrid or alternative-fuel NASCAR vehicles making their debut.
⚡ A fourth manufacturer influencing NASCAR’s fuel decisions.

One thing is certain—NASCAR is at a crossroads, and whatever decision it makes will shape the sport’s future for years to come.
