In the wake of the National Hockey League’s (NHL) triumphant All-Star event, the 4 Nations Face-Off, NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. has called on NASCAR to take a leaf out of the NHL’s playbook. The NHL’s All-Star game was a resounding success, pulling in an impressive 4.4 million viewers in the U.S. alone, peaking at 5.2 million. The event was hailed as a testament to the power of a well-structured All-Star event to captivate both die-hard fans and casual viewers.

In contrast, NASCAR’s 2024 All-Star race was met with a yawn, described by many as one of the sport’s most monotonous events. The race was devoid of the competitive action NASCAR fans typically anticipate, with Joey Logano leading 199 out of the 200 laps to bag the $1 million prize.

In a social media post, Dale Earnhardt Jr., who had a significant hand in bringing the All-Star Race back to North Wilkesboro Speedway, commended the NHL’s approach and nudged NASCAR officials to take note. Earnhardt Jr. tweeted, “The @NHL cracked the All-Star code. What can be learned from it by other industries? How they made that game matter to the players, and how that interest snowballed over the course of a few days for even the most casual fans… genius.”

The NHL’s decision to deviate from its traditional All-Star format was rewarded handsomely. The innovative 4 Nations Face-Off, where top players battled for national pride, saw the combined North American viewership hit an astounding 10.1 million. That’s a 203% increase from the last major USA-Canada showdown in 2016. On the flip side, NASCAR’s All-Star Race has seemingly stagnated.

The North Wilkesboro Speedway race, marketed as a nostalgic throwback, failed to deliver on the track. Even a 17% increase in viewership paled when compared to the viewership numbers of NFL, NBA, or NHL events.

A closer look at NASCAR’s overall viewership figures reveals a concerning trend. In 2022, the sport averaged 3.64 million viewers per race. The number dropped to 3.29 million in 2023 and further to 3.22 million in 2024. While still substantial, these numbers indicate a steady decline in audience engagement.

A decade ago, in 2015, the All-Star race viewership stood at 3.8 million. Just a year ago, it was 2.57 million. The downward trend is clear, highlighting the need for NASCAR to revamp its All-Star Race and make it relevant and exciting once again.

In an interesting aside, Dale Earnhardt Jr. also shared some personal reflections during a podcast with YouTuber Cleetus McFarland. He confessed his biggest fear is not being there for his daughters as they grow older, due to his age. He also expressed regret at not marrying his wife, Amy Earnhardt, sooner, thus starting their family earlier. Having lost his father, Dale Earnhardt Sr., in a tragic accident at the 2001 Daytona 500 when he was just 26, Dale Jr. carries a deep emotional weight around parenthood.
