NASCAR Aims to Expand Hispanic Audience with Exciting Race in Los Angeles

In a bold move to attract a larger Hispanic audience, NASCAR is making strategic efforts to grow its fan base outside of the United States. This weekend’s highly anticipated Busch Light Clash at The Coliseum, taking place in the heart of Los Angeles, is a crucial part of the organization’s outreach and growth strategy.

According to NASCAR Vice President Chad Siegler, Los Angeles was chosen as the opening race location due to its large population of Mexican Hispanics. He stated, “For us, as we look at growing a fan base outside the U.S., it’s a no-brainer.” This decision reflects NASCAR’s commitment to expanding its international presence and embracing diversity.

NASCAR’s dedication to reaching the Hispanic community goes beyond the racetrack. The organization has recently released a captivating 9-minute video titled “LA Lifestyle: How Mexican culture has shaped the city of Los Angeles and its love of motorsport” on its official YouTube channel. Hosted by NASCAR Mexico drivers Regina Sirvent and Max Gutierrez, the video showcases the vibrant Mexican car culture in Los Angeles, featuring lowriders, pinstriping, airbrushing of classic cars, and engine hacking.

Currently, there are only two active Mexican-born drivers in NASCAR across all series. Daniel Suarez, driving for Trackhouse Racing, is the sole Mexican-born driver competing in the NASCAR Cup Series. In 2022, Suarez made history as the first Mexican-born driver to win a Cup Series race. He also won the Xfinity championship in 2016. With his multi-year contract with Trackhouse Racing, Suarez is poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming season.

The Hispanic population in the United States is approximately 65 million, accounting for about 20% of the total population. FastCompany, in an analysis of the Latino sports audience market, highlighted that Latinos have a strong affinity for sports. With a staggering $2.8 trillion in gross domestic product (GDP), the U.S. Latino economy surpasses that of all but five countries worldwide. Furthermore, 94% of Hispanic males identify as sports fans, with over half of them being avid fans. Latinos also attend sporting events twice as frequently as other fans.

Taking a page from the NFL’s playbook, NASCAR is actively pursuing the Hispanic market while leveraging the shared car culture that unites these communities. By embracing diversity and engaging with the Hispanic audience, NASCAR hopes to achieve substantial success in the future.
