Online abuse escalates in motorsport: FIA and drivers respond to digital hate

The world of motorsport is being engulfed by a tsunami of online abuse, as the FIA and drivers unite to combat this escalating crisis!

Online vitriol has reached unprecedented levels, targeting drivers in Formula 1, Formula 2, and IndyCar. The toxic digital hate often stems from on-track incidents or team decisions, perpetuating a culture of negativity and hostility. While online abuse has been a lingering issue, the amplification of tribalism on social media platforms and the global reach of F1 through platforms like Netflix’s Drive to Survive have exacerbated the situation.

In response to this alarming trend, drivers are taking a stand against the abuse, determined to reclaim the online space from the clutches of toxicity. The FIA, along with drivers from various racing series, are joining forces to address this pressing issue and ensure a safer and more respectful online environment for everyone involved in motorsport.

The scourge of online abuse in motorsport intensifies, with drivers across Formula 1, Formula 2, and IndyCar recently targeted by waves of digital hate, often triggered by on-track incidents or team decisions. While the problem of online abuse has festered for years, the rise in tribalism fueled by social media and the globalisation of F1 through Netflix’s Drive to Survive has brought unprecedented toxicity to the forefront. In response, several drivers have begun taking action to counteract the abuse.
