The National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) revealed this Thursday, November 23, that in the first seven months of 2023, 81.5 million vehicles were inspected in person and through automated means, an increase of 12.6% compared to the same period in 2022, and 694,000 infractions were detected.

The data is included in the road accident report, and between January and July, there was a 12.2% increase in the number of infractions, with the majority, 67%, being due to speeding, which represents a 21.6% increase compared to the same period in 2022.

“Increases were observed in almost all types of infractions, with notable mentions being speeding, child restraint system infractions (+40.0%), and lack of insurance (+19.4%), among others”, the document reads.

Regarding driving under the influence of alcohol, between January and July 2023, 1.12 million drivers were tested, representing a 29.3% increase compared to the same period last year.

Road crime, measured by the total number of arrests, increased by 12.2% compared to 2022, reaching 21.2 thousand drivers. Of the total, 55.4% was due to driving under the influence of alcohol (+12.9%), followed by 35% for lack of legal driving license (+17.4%).

The report also adds that since the introduction of the points-based driving license system in June 2016, the number of drivers who lost points on their driving license was 618.8 thousand by the end of July 2023.

Since June 2016, 2,666 drivers have lost their license (due to revocation), according to the same source.
