The historic Italian track is undergoing a renovation to meet modern Formula 1 requirements. This project will cost €21 million and is expected to be completed in 140 days, in time for this year’s Italian Grand Prix.

The final result of the renovation will be a more contemporary, efficient, safe, comfortable, and sustainable system. The process will use materials obtained from recycled and renewable sources, minimizing the use of new resources and reducing the impact on the park’s natural environment. It will also contribute to reducing air and noise pollution.

The track will undergo several changes, including the implementation of a newly designed flexible pavement. The curbs along the corners will be demolished and rebuilt, and the water collection and drainage system will be renewed to better handle extreme weather conditions that are becoming more frequent.

Other modifications include the redevelopment of the Vedano entrance avenue, the demolition and reconstruction of three underground passages, and the construction of a new underground passage connecting Porta Vedano to the Parabolica. Additionally, new pedestrian paths made of concrete will be created.

The official Monza track website explained that the purpose of the underground passages is to ensure maximum safety for the public, separating pedestrian and vehicular traffic. They will also provide functional and safe access for heavy vehicles.

The renewal announcement was made on Monza’s official website through a press release. The statement mentioned that on August 30, 2024, during the 95th edition of the “Formula 1 Pirelli Gran Premio d’Italia”, the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, which is the oldest, most prestigious, and fastest circuit in the world of Formula 1, will be unveiled after 140 days of work and a total investment of 21 million euros. The track will have a completely renovated appearance and functionality, making “The Temple of Speed” more contemporary, efficient, safe, comfortable, and sustainable.

The press release also highlighted the participation of Matteo Salvini, Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, in the start of the renovation works.

Angelo Sticchi Damiani, President of the Automobile Club Italia, expressed the desire to combine the remarkable history of this site with technological advances and innovative architectural solutions, while at the same time respecting its iconic status. He emphasized the importance of preserving the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, located in the second largest enclosed park in Europe, as a treasure for future generations. The club has designed an ambitious project to revitalize the circuit, aiming to align it with the best circuits in the world in terms of quality, while honoring its over one hundred years of history. The initial interventions will focus on ensuring the usability of the facilities and public safety, with the goal of presenting a new and captivating image of the circuit for the next grand prix.

The presence of Matteo Salvini, Vice President of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, at the event showed the government’s and public authorities’ support for the Automobile Club of Italy, the Automobile Club Milano, and SIAS. This team effort was further demonstrated by the unwavering support of the Lombardy Region, represented by President Attilio Fontana.

Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, expressed his gratitude to the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, the President of Lombardy, the President of the Automobile Club of Italy, and the mayor of Monza for their efforts in making these important works possible. He eagerly awaited the completion of the renovations in time for the Italian Grand Prix in September and looked forward to the continuation of the comprehensive improvement plan in the coming years.

In a recent statement, Attilio Fontana, President of the Lombardy Region, expressed his admiration for the Monza Park and Villa Real, referring to them as valuable assets for the region. He highlighted the importance of the Autodromo, where the renowned Monza Grand Prix takes place, and its contribution to the local economy.

Fontana emphasized the ongoing support provided by the Lombardy Region to the Villa Reale complex, with a substantial investment of 55 million euros for the implementation of the master plan. He also mentioned the financial support from ACI, with 32 million euros from autonomous funds and an additional 25 million euros from the State, to ensure the optimal use of the facilities. Fontana expressed his hope that the renovation works, including the stands and boxes, would be completed on time.

Furthermore, Fontana expressed his confidence in national institutions to continue supporting the Monza Park, along with the Lombardy Region, emphasizing the importance of both the Villa and the Grand Prix.

Paolo Pilotto, Mayor of Monza, was also present at the event. He acknowledged the collective efforts of all public entities involved in the realization of the project. Pilotto emphasized the careful balance maintained between the requirements of the sports facility, which has a prestigious history, and the preservation of the cultural and environmental heritage that surrounds it.

Pilotto considered the start of the works as a significant achievement and a challenge to ensure that the execution is of high quality and in accordance with the agreed schedule. He emphasized the need for speed and skill, synonymous characteristics of the circuit, and expressed confidence that these qualities would also be applied to other anticipated projects in the capital of Brianza, such as the extension of the M5 line from Milan to Monza.
