Montoya Warns Verstappen: “He Must Learn to Control His Anger in 2025”

Max Verstappen Reflects on Frustration-Filled 2024: Hungary GP the Breaking Point

As Max Verstappen sets his sights on a fifth consecutive Formula 1 world title, former F1 star Juan Pablo Montoya has issued a stark warning: the Dutchman needs to manage his anger if things don’t go his way this season.

Verstappen’s dominance in recent years has been undeniable, but 2024 presented new challenges, including a four-month winless streak that tested his patience. While he ultimately overcame those struggles to retain the title, Montoya believes the 2025 season will be a different beast.

Montoya: Verstappen Must Adapt to Losing His Edge

According to Montoya, Verstappen’s biggest challenge this year won’t just be his rivals—it will be his own mindset.

“Verstappen is so used to having the upper hand, so he will need to learn how to control his anger and finish races in a worse car.”

For years, Red Bull has delivered the fastest car on the grid, allowing Verstappen to dictate races at will. But if the field catches up—or if Red Bull struggles with its 2025 challenger—Montoya believes Max will need to adjust his expectations and temperament.

“If Red Bull can deliver Verstappen a good car, he can keep bringing good results for the team throughout the season.”

The message is clear: if Red Bull stumbles, Verstappen can’t afford to let frustration derail his season.

Will Liam Lawson Challenge Verstappen at Red Bull?

One of the biggest changes for Red Bull in 2025 is the arrival of Liam Lawson, who will be replacing Sergio Pérez as Verstappen’s teammate.

Montoya believes that while Lawson will initially play the role of No. 2 driver, he won’t stay in the background for long.

“Verstappen is the dominant driver at Red Bull, and Liam Lawson will try to find his feet. I think Lawson will play nice as the number two driver, but when he finds some pace, he will push Verstappen.”

If Lawson proves to be a real threat within the team, Verstappen may have to fight harder than ever before—not just against rival teams, but inside Red Bull itself.

Final Thought: A Season That Could Test Verstappen Like Never Before

Montoya’s assessment makes one thing clear: Max Verstappen is heading into a defining season.

  • If Red Bull remains dominant, Verstappen could cruise to a fifth straight title.
  • If Red Bull struggles, Verstappen’s ability to control his emotions and adapt will be crucial.
  • If Liam Lawson proves to be a real contender, Verstappen might face a battle inside his own garage.

The reigning champion is undeniably the favorite, but 2025 might just be his biggest test yet.
