Five Formula 1 teams have been facing difficulties in the 2024 season so far, with Alpine, Williams, and Sauber being the big losers. Apart from Esteban Ocon’s 10th place in Miami, these teams have had little success, with Ocon being the only one to score a point. However, the Monaco Grand Prix classification presents a great opportunity for Alpine and Williams to progress and regain some respect. Although reaching RB is unlikely, Haas’ disqualification opens a chance for the teams behind them. Will they be able to take advantage of this opportunity?
Williams driver Alex Albon was thrilled to secure his first appearance in Q3 of the year in Monaco. The team managed to solve some of the understeer issues that haunted them in practice, especially in sector two. Additionally, Monaco is a track that penalizes less in terms of weight, favoring Williams. Albon explained that Monza is the track that penalizes the most in terms of weight, while Monaco is the least penalizing, making the game more fair for them. The team has been focusing on low-speed and tight corners, which align well with the characteristics of the Monaco track. Furthermore, the challenging overtaking conditions in Monaco make it crucial for Williams to perform well in qualifying.
However, Albon is aware of the challenges they may face in the race due to tire wear. Last year, they struggled with tire wear, making it easier for other cars to overtake. Albon hopes that the faster cars will pull away and provide him with clean air to preserve the tires. In the previous race, Williams was vulnerable, and both Albon and his teammate Logan Sargeant were victims of overtakes. This year, Albon aims to avoid a repeat and stay ahead, especially with Sergio Perez from Red Bull right behind.
Pierre Gasly’s 10th place in the Alpine does not indicate that the team has overcome their initial struggles in 2024. Instead, Monaco provided an opportunity for them to push beyond the usual limits of the car. Gasly took risks and pushed to the limit to secure Alpine’s first appearance in Q3 this year. However, Gasly remains focused on the two cars ahead of him, Tsunoda and Albon, rather than getting too excited about the team’s progress. On the other hand, Esteban Ocon was disappointed not to make it to Q3 and acknowledged that both drivers could have done better. He made a mistake in Q2 that cost him a higher finish. Ocon believes there was more potential in the car and emphasizes the need for improvement.
The Sauber faces a tough challenge in Monaco, with Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu qualifying in 19th and 20th places. They were significantly slower than the competition, with no clear explanation for their difficulties. Bottas mentioned that they struggle to extract the maximum from the car in one lap, despite having a balanced car throughout the circuit. Sauber’s best hope lies in any chaos that may occur during the race and in a pit stop strategy that involves stopping early or late. Their goal is to limit the damage and avoid falling further behind the faster cars.
Overall, the Monaco Grand Prix presents an opportunity for Alpine and Williams to improve their position, while Sauber faces a challenging task to score points.
