The Monaco Grand Prix shatters U.S. viewership records, sending shockwaves through the F1 world as excitement for the upcoming “F1” movie reaches a fever pitch.

In a jaw-dropping turn of events, the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix may not have delivered the thrilling two-stop race fans hoped for, but it certainly captured the attention of American viewers in a historic way. ABC and ESPN reported a staggering 2.3 million viewers tuning in on Sunday between 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. ET, marking the largest live audience from the United States ever recorded for the prestigious event. This represents a significant 15% increase from the previous year’s viewership of 2 million. Of the total viewers, a whopping 917,000 fell within the coveted 18–49 age demographic, showcasing the success of Liberty Media’s strategic marketing endeavors across the pond.

During a riveting peak moment between 10:30 and 10:45 a.m. ET, viewership skyrocketed to 2.6 million, a figure surpassed only by the Miami races. The inaugural Miami race drew 2.6 million viewers, with the following year’s event boasting an astonishing 3.1 million spectators. On average, F1 broadcasts on ABC, ESPN, and ESPN2 are now attracting 1.3 million viewers per race, an impressive 18% surge compared to the 1.1 million average viewership in 2023 and 2024.

The surge in viewership can be attributed to Formula 1 and Liberty Media’s concerted efforts to expand their presence in the U.S. market. From the wildly popular “Drive to Survive” series on Netflix to innovative brand partnerships with industry giants like LEGO and Disney, the sport is solidifying its position for sustained growth through strategic alliances and trend-focused promotion.

The resounding success of “Drive to Survive” has played a pivotal role in driving these remarkable viewership figures, alongside the mounting anticipation for the upcoming “F1” movie, which has been generating significant buzz. During the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, drivers were treated to a private screening of the film, prompting widespread excitement and interest among fans.

Director Joseph Kosinski, credited the inspiration for the movie to the compelling narratives showcased in “Drive to Survive,” highlighting the unique dynamics of F1 as a sport where teammates are also fierce competitors, adding an extra layer of drama and intensity to the racing world.

With the “F1” movie already garnering immense success ahead of its release, including expanding to more IMAX theaters due to overwhelming demand, it comes as no surprise that Formula 1 is experiencing a resurgence in popularity this year. The stage is set for a thrilling intersection of sports and entertainment as the momentum continues to build towards the highly anticipated film debut.
