On May 25, 2024, during the Monaco Grand Prix of Formula 1, the first lap was marked by an accident involving Sergio Perez of Red Bull Racing and both Haas team cars at Beau Rivage. This incident led to the display of the Red Flag, temporarily interrupting the race. Perez, who had started in 16th position, was unaware of Kevin Magnussen’s Haas car on his right rear corner, resulting in a collision as they approached Turn 2. Magnussen, with limited space ahead, chose not to back off, causing Perez’s Red Bull RB20 to spin uncontrollably and suffer severe damage. Unfortunately, Perez’s spinning car also hit Nico Hulkenberg, whose race came to an abrupt end. Despite the intensity of the accident, all three drivers emerged unscathed, highlighting the effectiveness of safety measures in Formula 1. The incident caused significant damage to the barriers and scattered debris on the track, leading to the display of the Red Flag and a possible extended stoppage. Magnussen, who was close to receiving penalty points that could lead to a race ban, was fortunate not to be investigated by the stewards. This collision involving Perez and the Haas cars was one of three incidents that occurred during the chaotic first lap. Another involved Carlos Sainz, who made contact with Oscar Piastri, resulting in a tire puncture and forcing Piastri to stop at Turn 4. However, due to the Red Flag, Sainz will have the opportunity to rejoin the race from third position during a new standing start. Additionally, there was a collision between the two Alpine cars, with Esteban Ocon attempting a risky maneuver on Pierre Gasly at Turn 8 before the tunnel. This maneuver caused Ocon’s car to take off and cause significant damage. The race is scheduled to resume at 3:44 PM local time.
