Monaco GP Chaos: Verstappen Criticizes F1’s Mario Kart-Like Experiment at Iconic Race

Max Verstappen Blasts F1’s Monaco GP Rule: “It’s Like Mario Kart on Steroids!”

Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen has unleashed a scathing critique on the mandatory two-pitstop rule implemented during the Monaco Grand Prix, likening the race to a chaotic Mario Kart showdown.

Verstappen expressed his discontent with the new regulation, which aimed to inject excitement into the typically predictable Monaco race but ended up turning it into what he described as a high-stakes game resembling the popular video game Mario Kart.

The Red Bull Racing star highlighted the lack of overtaking opportunities at the street circuit, emphasizing that even with multiple pitstops, passing remained a near-impossible feat. “You can’t race here anyway, so it doesn’t matter what you do. One stop, 10 stops. Even at the end I was in the lead, but my tyres were completely gone, and you still can’t pass,” Verstappen lamented.

In a bold statement to Sky, Verstappen criticized the rule change, stating, “We were almost doing Mario Kart. Then we have to install bits on the car. Maybe you can throw bananas around. Yeah, I don’t know. Slippery surface.”

Despite his strategic attempt to delay his final pitstop in hopes of a race-altering red flag, Verstappen ultimately finished fourth in a disappointing outcome for the Dutch driver and his team.

The Monaco Grand Prix showcased Red Bull Racing’s struggles on the bumpy street circuit, with Verstappen qualifying behind Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton, who later incurred a grid penalty, further complicating Red Bull’s prospects for a podium finish.

Looking ahead to the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, Verstappen finds himself trailing McLaren’s Oscar Piastri by 25 points in the championship standings, with Norris closing in just three points behind the leader.

As the dust settles on the thrilling Monaco Grand Prix, Verstappen’s fiery comments add fuel to the debate surrounding F1’s ongoing quest for more engaging and unpredictable races, leaving fans and pundits alike eagerly anticipating the next chapter in this gripping season.
