Mohammed Ben Sulayem secures FIA presidency unopposed: what this means for motorsport’s future

FIA Unleashes Shockwaves: Mohammed Ben Sulayem Secures Uncontested Presidency for Second Term!

In a stunning turn of events amid a backdrop of intrigue and speculation, Mohammed Ben Sulayem has been officially re-elected as the President of the FIA, a move that solidifies his authority within the motorsport governing body for another four years. The monumental announcement came following a pivotal vote during the General Assembly held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on December 12.

In a race devoid of challengers, Ben Sulayem faced no opposition in this year’s presidential election. While several parties initially expressed interest in challenging his leadership, they failed to assemble a complete list of vice presidential candidates, rendering their bids null and void. This dramatic turn of events left the Emirati with a clear path to re-election, as he now embarks on a second term after taking the reins from Jean Todt in late 2021.

The FIA’s official statement echoed the magnitude of this moment, declaring: “Following a vote of the General Assembly in Tashkent, Republic of Uzbekistan, Mohammed Ben Sulayem has been re-elected as President of the FIA for his second four-year term, alongside Deputy President for Sport Malcolm Wilson OBE, Deputy President for Automobile Mobility and Tourism Tim Shearman, and Senate President Carmelo Sanz de Barros.”

Ben Sulayem’s return to power is not only a testament to his leadership but also a reflection of the strategic alliances he has cultivated within the organization. However, the lack of diversity in the vice presidential lineup has raised eyebrows, with the only South American on the list being Fabianna Ecclestone, already a member of Ben Sulayem’s team. This raises important questions about representation within the FIA as the organization gears up for its next phase.

The newly elected World Council for Automobile Mobility and Tourism, as well as the World Motor Sport Council, are set to serve until the next General Assembly elections in 2029, ensuring continuity in leadership during a time of rapid transformation in the motorsport landscape.

As Ben Sulayem embarks on this new chapter, the motorsport community watches closely. With the power dynamics firmly in his hands, the question remains: what bold initiatives will he champion in this new term? The stage is set for a thrilling four years ahead in the world of motorsport!
