Mitsubishi Motors is ready to join the newly formed Honda-Nissan alliance, focused on the development of 100% electric vehicles and software.

According to Nikkei Asia, Mitsubishi intends to join the existing partnership between Honda and Nissan, which aims to explore the possibility of future collaboration for the creation of “software platforms, battery technologies for electric vehicles, and complementary products.”

Mitsubishi’s entry into this partnership is seen as highly likely, especially since Nissan holds a 34% stake in the brand.

The same source also reveals that Mitsubishi Motors has already signed a confidentiality agreement with Honda and Nissan and has already begun discussions to strengthen the alliance with the two Japanese brands.

It should be noted that Honda and Nissan are the second and third largest car manufacturers in Japan, respectively, with global sales of 4.1 million and 3.44 million units in the fiscal year ended in March 2024. If we add Mitsubishi’s 810,000 units, the new group will have sales of 8.35 million vehicles.

The possibility of Mitsubishi reinforcing the strategic alliance between Nissan and Honda arises at a time when Japanese car manufacturers are striving to rethink the development and production of electric vehicles, after being surpassed by rivals, particularly from China. In this sense, the partnership between the three companies is seen as a fundamental strategy to reduce costs.
