Mission accomplished: F1 prodigy Andrea Kimi Antonelli gets Driving licence, so he can step into Hamilton’s shoes at Mercedes

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the Formula 1 world, Mercedes has officially confirmed that 18-year-old Italian sensation Andrea Kimi Antonelli has secured his super licence, paving the way for him to step into the colossal shoes left by Lewis Hamilton. The announcement, made via Mercedes’ Instagram account, featured a photo of Antonelli giving a thumbs-up in a driving school car, accompanied by the caption: “Mission completed,” with ticks for both his super licence and driving licence.

Antonelli, who turned 18 last August—the minimum age to drive on public roads in Italy—has been on Mercedes’ radar for years, touted as one of the most promising talents in motorsport. His rapid ascent through the ranks has been nothing short of extraordinary, with extensive testing in Formula 1 machinery already under his belt. Now, with Hamilton’s blockbuster move to Ferrari, Antonelli is set to partner George Russell at Mercedes, marking the dawn of a new era for the Silver Arrows.

The 2025 F1 season, which kicks off in Australia on March 16, will see Antonelli join a wave of rookies making the leap from Formula Two. But unlike his peers, Antonelli carries the weight of immense expectations. Mercedes, a team synonymous with dominance in the hybrid era, is banking on the young Italian to deliver results from the get-go. The team is set to unveil its 2025 challenger on February 24, just two days before pre-season testing begins in Bahrain.

Hamilton’s departure to Ferrari has left a void that many thought would be impossible to fill. With 105 grand prix wins and 104 pole positions, the British legend’s legacy is unparalleled. Yet, Mercedes’ decision to promote Antonelli signals a bold, forward-thinking strategy. Team principal Toto Wolff has long been a vocal supporter of the Italian prodigy, and this move underscores his belief in Antonelli’s potential to become F1’s next superstar.

Antonelli’s journey to F1 has been a masterclass in precision and preparation. From dominating karting championships to excelling in junior formulae, he has consistently proven his mettle. His super licence achievement is the culmination of years of hard work and dedication, but the real challenge begins now. Competing in F1 is a different beast altogether, and Antonelli will need to adapt quickly to the relentless demands of the sport.

As the countdown to the 2025 season begins, all eyes will be on Antonelli. Can he live up to the hype and deliver for Mercedes? Or will the pressure of replacing a legend like Hamilton prove too much? One thing is certain: Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s arrival in F1 is set to be one of the most electrifying storylines of the year.
