Gabriele Mini, a junior driver from Alpine representing Prema Racing, set the fastest time during a chaotic qualifying session in Monaco for the FIA Formula 3 Championship. The session was split into two groups, with Mini securing the fastest time in Group A and Christian Mansell in second place in Group B. The grid order for this weekend’s races was determined by an aggregate result from both groups, with the overall fastest driver starting the feature race from pole position. The sixth fastest driver from each group would secure the inverted pole position for the Sprint race. Group A, consisting of cars with even numbers, including championship leader Leonardo Fornaroli and runner-up Luke Browning, was the first to hit the track. Browning initially set the fastest time, but Fornaroli surpassed him by excelling in the first and final sectors. Van Hoepen lost his time among the top five by exceeding track limits at Turn 10.
Midway through the initial session, Browning set a new record time, beating Fornaroli by 1.4 seconds, while Mini secured third place with his Prema before Mari Boya improved his performance.
Goethe scraped the wall towards the end of the session but managed to secure eighth place, while Mini pushed his car to the limit but fell just short of Browning’s top spot.
As track conditions improved, Boya shone in the Group A segment, setting impressive times in the sectors until he collided with the wall at the Piscine chicane.
Browning also made a crucial mistake at the same point, scraping the wall and abandoning his attempt, allowing Mini to clinch pole position with a time of 1:23.492s.
Sami Meguetounif was the first of the Group B drivers to hit the track, but a red flag was raised when rookie James Hedley crashed into the wall after a forced block in turn 1.
Hedley was unable to set a time as he had to be towed back to the pits in Matias Zagazeta’s Jenzer Motorsport car, while the other drivers returned to the track to warm up their tires.
Meguetounif initially set the fastest time, but Beganovic claimed the top spot in the Group B qualifying session.
Mansell, driving for ART Grand Prix, delivered an impressive lap in the middle of the session, trailing Beganovic by just two tenths of a second with a time of 1:25.078s.
Arvid Lindblad was the first driver to break the 1:24 mark, but Mansell set impressive sector times throughout the lap to claim the top spot on the timing sheets.
In the final three minutes of the session, the Group B drivers sought to find an extra second to beat Mini’s qualifying lap.
A second red flag was raised when Charlie Wurz lost control of his car in turn 1, causing Montoya to also lose control and prematurely end the session.
Beganovic was on a fast lap when the red flag was raised, ultimately ending up behind Mini and Mansell by half a second.
The Feature Race will begin with Mini starting from pole position, followed by Group B leader Mansell.
Tsolov will start on pole position inverted for the Sprint Race, with Lindblad behind, while Beganovic will start from the third row for both races.
