Shocking Pitlane Incident Forces Driver Out of Le Mans 24 Hours

A jaw-dropping incident at the Le Mans 24 Hours Test Day has led to Iron Dames driver Michelle Gatting being forced out of the race due to a freak pitlane accident. Gatting, set to be the gold-rated driver in the all-female Iron Dames Porsche 911 GT3 R line-up, suffered a broken foot during what should have been a routine driver change. The mishap occurred in a crowded pitlane situation following a red flag, resulting in Gatting’s unfortunate injury and subsequent replacement by Silver-graded Sarah Bovy.

Recounting the harrowing ordeal, Gatting explained, “When I went out of the car, I saw Rahel [Frey, team-mate] was not next to me to do the driver change so I looked around for her and, in that moment, unfortunately the team dropped the car and it landed on my foot. It was pure bad luck, nobody to blame.”

Despite her valiant efforts to convince the team that she could still drive, Gatting was deemed unfit, leading team boss Bovy to step in and join Frey and Celia Martin in the LMGT3 Porsche. Gatting’s disappointment at missing out on the race was palpable, especially considering her heightened motivation following the team’s switch to Porsche machinery this year.

The Iron Dames crew, having finished fifth in class in the previous year’s 24 Hours, now face the challenge of competing without Gatting. Her determination to return to action at the Imola round of the European Le Mans Series demonstrates her resilience and commitment to the sport. Gatting remains focused on maintaining their lead in the ELMS LMGT3 standings and continuing to vie for the championship title.
