Meyer Shank Racing Returns to Daytona, Ready to Reclaim Glory

The weekend at Daytona International Speedway has been an emotional rollercoaster for Meyer Shank Racing (MSR), marking their return to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship after a year-long hiatus. The Ohio-based team, sidelined in 2024 due to Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) US’s decision to consolidate its GTP efforts with Wayne Taylor Racing, is back and determined to prove its worth with a rejuvenated program.

“The Band Is Back Together”

Reflecting on the call that brought MSR back into the fold, team owner Mike Shank shared a heartfelt story.

“I was at Chipotle when I got the call last year, standing there with a brown rice bowl,” Shank recalled. “It was David Salters [HRC US President], and he said, ‘We’re getting the band back together!’ I was just overjoyed. After everything we’ve been through, I felt immense pride.”

MSR’s 2023 campaign was overshadowed by controversy after a points deduction for manipulating tire pressure data at the Rolex 24, costing them a championship. However, the team’s late-season resurgence and renewed commitment have set the stage for an ambitious comeback.

Bigger and Better

MSR is stepping into 2025 stronger than ever, fielding two Acura ARX-06 prototypes in the GTP class. The revamped driver lineup reflects a blend of experience and fresh talent:

  • Full-Season Drivers:
    • Returning stars Colin Braun and Tom Blomqvist.
    • New recruits Renger van der Zande (ex-Cadillac) and Nick Yelloly (formerly of BMW Team RLL).
  • Rolex 24 Additions:
    • IndyCar standout Felix Rosenqvist.
    • Honda factory driver Kakunoshin Ohta.
    • Chip Ganassi Racing talents Alex Palou and Scott Dixon.

Shank emphasized the collaborative effort in assembling this powerhouse roster:

“We crunched the numbers and looked at historic performances. Tom and Colin were no-brainers for the No. 60 car, while Nick and Renger bring veteran expertise to the No. 93. It’s a strong mix.”

Engineering Excellence

MSR’s engineering team remains largely intact, with 22 of the 23 personnel returning. This continuity, coupled with enhancements from HRC, has bolstered the team’s confidence.

The ARX-06 platform has undergone significant software improvements, including advancements in AI integration, while retaining its mechanical core. This ensures MSR can hit the ground running, particularly in the early stages of the season.

“Acura has invested heavily to get us here,” Shank said. “The car is well-prepared, and our focus is on optimizing what we already have.”

Roar Before the 24 Sets the Stage

A productive weekend of testing at the Roar saw both MSR cars log valuable laps, further fueling the team’s optimism. Shank is clear about the team’s goals for 2025:

“We expect to be back on the podium. Maybe we don’t win, but there’s no reason we shouldn’t be challenging for top spots.”

The Road Ahead

With a strengthened lineup, proven engineering, and an unwavering determination, Meyer Shank Racing is primed to make a statement at the Rolex 24 and throughout the 2025 season. As Shank puts it, the team is ready to “iron out the creases” and rise to the challenge once again. The journey to redemption has officially begun.
