Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff Stands by Vasseur: “Rain? We Wouldn’t Mind”
The Mercedes team had a solid performance during the Miami Grand Prix qualifying session, with driver Kimi Antonelli securing a third-place starting position, only 67 milliseconds behind the pole position. His teammate, George Russell, will start right behind him in fifth place on the grid. Team Principal Toto Wolff expressed his thoughts on the qualifying results and aligned himself with Ferrari’s Frederic Vasseur in hoping for rain during the race.
Wolff acknowledged that both drivers didn’t have flawless laps, with Antonelli making a small mistake in the first corner and Russell experiencing oversteer in turn seven. Despite the challenges posed by McLaren and Verstappen, Wolff considered the qualifying session positive, even though they landed in third and fifth places. Looking ahead to the race, Wolff mentioned that the weather forecast was uncertain, and he wouldn’t mind if rain spiced things up on the track.
The Mercedes team is aware that their race pace might not be as strong as McLaren’s in hotter conditions, especially considering the recent impressive performances by Verstappen and the Ferrari drivers under similar circumstances. Wolff emphasized that they are diligently working to improve in these conditions and are hopeful of making progress in the upcoming races.
