Lewis Hamilton was the fastest driver for Mercedes in the first two free practice sessions of the Mexican Grand Prix in Formula 1, but it was far from a good day for the British driver: he was far from the front in both sessions yesterday at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, setting his best time in FP2 where he finished seventh.

The seven-time world champion described a complicated Friday, in which the W14 gave him worse sensations than in the United States Grand Prix inexplicably: ‘It was a challenging day for me, the car seemed completely different from what it was in Austin a week ago and we need to understand why. We didn’t show the most competitive long-run pace, so we focused on trying different setups. The track here has its challenges, but we have done well here in recent years’.

Despite the rough start, Hamilton remains confident in improvements: ‘We are not yet where we want to be, but we will work hard to improve and make the necessary changes. The car showed promising pace in Austin and I am confident that we can achieve a good position here, and there is a lot of room for improvement’.
