Andrea Kimi Antonelli Steps Up to Mercedes in 2025: Russell Promises Equal Partnership

The Formula 1 driver market just keeps delivering twists, and the latest revelation comes from Mercedes boss Toto Wolff. Despite months of speculation and “bromance-fueled” rumors, Wolff has now admitted that the team never seriously expected to sign Red Bull’s star driver, Max Verstappen. Instead, the Silver Arrows have turned their attention to the future, placing their faith in teenage sensation Kimi Antonelli.

Hamilton’s Ferrari switch shakes up Mercedes’ plans

The Verstappen-to-Mercedes buzz gained momentum following Lewis Hamilton’s bombshell announcement that he would leave for Ferrari at the end of the 2024 season. Hamilton’s departure marked the end of an era but gave Mercedes a rare opportunity: time to strategically plan their next steps.

Rather than chasing an established superstar like Verstappen, Mercedes turned inward, elevating their junior program prodigy, 18-year-old Kimi Antonelli, to a full-time seat. The move positions Antonelli alongside George Russell, who steps into the team leader role in 2025. Valtteri Bottas, a familiar face, rejoined the fold as a reserve driver, providing a wealth of experience to support the team’s youthful lineup.

Why Verstappen stayed put

Red Bull’s once-dominant grip on Formula 1 loosened significantly in 2024. The departure of key figures like Adrian Newey and Jonathan Wheatley, coupled with a less-than-invincible car, opened the door to speculation about Verstappen’s future. For a time, Mercedes seemed like a logical destination for the four-time world champion.

Toto Wolff didn’t shy away from fueling the rumors, describing Verstappen’s skill as unparalleled:
“There are so many factors that play a role for a driver joining. From a rational perspective, he’s the quickest driver in the quickest car. But there’s more depth to someone like Max. He considers factors beyond just speed.”

Verstappen himself acknowledged the attention, quipping, “Lately, Toto has been really nice, saying a lot of nice things about me!”

But in a conversation with Wolff, Verstappen made it clear he wasn’t ready to leave Red Bull:
“At one point, he said he wanted to stay where he was for the time being because that felt good to him,” Wolff revealed in a recent interview with Auto, Motor und Sport.

Mercedes doubles down on Antonelli

With Verstappen off the table, Wolff and Mercedes pivoted. The decision to promote Antonelli signals a clear commitment to long-term growth. Describing the move, Wolff explained, “That’s when I said we would go for Kimi Antonelli because that felt good to us too. And now we’ll see where we end up.”

Antonelli’s rise has been meteoric. The Italian teenager has been hailed as a future world champion, dominating the junior categories with composure beyond his years. Teaming him with Russell ensures Mercedes has a foundation to build on for years to come.

Aston Martin enters the Verstappen sweepstakes

While Mercedes may have backed away from Verstappen, another team has made a bold play. Aston Martin, now powered by Adrian Newey’s engineering genius and Honda engines, is reportedly offering a staggering £1 billion package to lure the Dutchman in 2026. Under the ambitious leadership of Lawrence Stroll, the team is assembling a “Super Team” to rival Red Bull’s dominance.

With Verstappen’s Red Bull contract running through 2028, the Dutchman could remain with the team until he’s 31. But as Formula 1’s landscape shifts with the upcoming 2026 regulations, Verstappen’s options—and potential suitors—will remain a focal point of the sport.
