Unexpected turn of events in the Formula 1 racing sphere has left Red Bull’s Max Verstappen grappling with uncertainties about the upcoming 2025 season. An unforeseen surge in the performance of Mercedes amidst Red Bull’s seeming struggle has left pundits on the Total Motorsport F1 Show pondering the possible outcomes.
Ewan Gale, a seasoned F1 journalist, foreshadowed Verstappen’s potential challenge during an episode of Total Motorsport’s official F1 podcast. The four-time world champion’s team’s apparent struggle to decipher their car’s performance during F1 testing could prove to be a stumbling block in the upcoming season. Gale noted that Red Bull’s continued use of flow-vis in the final stages of testing could be indicative of ongoing issues.
While he refrained from declaring Red Bull’s testing performance an outright disaster, Gale suggested that the team is unlikely to hit the ground running as the fastest car. This, he reasoned, could put them at a disadvantage, especially considering that the team is still seemingly finding their footing amidst their competitors.
Brandon Sutton, another F1 expert, suggested that Red Bull’s unresolved issues, which trace their roots back to 2023, could potentially leave them trailing. He conjectured that the team might find themselves considering the forthcoming 2026 engine regulations, particularly in light of their new addition, Liam Lawson.
Sutton opined that while Verstappen had managed to mask the problems in 2023, fixing them over the winter break proved to be a tall order. He was hopeful, however, that the team would do enough to keep Verstappen in the title race, much like their recovery towards the end of the last season.
Interestingly, Mercedes, often linked with Verstappen recently, appeared to be in fine form during the testing in Bahrain. The Silver Arrows, with Kimi Antonelli at the helm, topped one of the timing sessions on the second day. Gale expressed pleasant surprise at their performance, though he cautioned against making definite conclusions.
Mercedes’ impressive performance came despite unfavorable conditions, with colder temperatures, high winds, and rainfall. Given their commendable performance under such conditions last season, it remains to be seen how they will fare under higher temperatures in the forthcoming Bahrain race.
The fluctuating dynamics of the F1 racing scene continue to keep fans and experts alike on their toes. As the countdown to the 2025 season continues, all eyes will be on Red Bull and Mercedes, as they continue to navigate the circuit’s bends and straights.
