Mercedes-Benz G-Class Recall: Faulty Latches Risk Rear Doors Popping Open Mid-Drive

Mercedes-Benz is facing a significant safety issue with certain G-Class models, specifically concerning a defect in the rear passenger-side door latch. This problem, which emerged after a U.S. dealer sought replacement parts for the latch in January 2021, can cause the door to unexpectedly open while driving, posing a severe safety risk.

The Problem with the Latch

The root of the issue lies in faulty components that may prevent the rear door from latching properly. In particular, if the child safety lock is activated and the door is forced open with excessive pressure, it could deform the internal components. This deformation can prevent the door from being opened from the inside, effectively trapping passengers.

A Long-Running Issue

Mercedes-Benz’s investigation into this defect began when a wave of warranty claims surfaced, revealing problems with both the original and replacement latches. Mercedes assembled a dedicated task force to address the situation and ultimately traced the issue back to a design flaw combined with tolerance variances in the latch’s positioning, which led to both the initial and subsequent recall conditions.

The issue reared its head again in early 2024 when a non-functional door lock was found on a G-Class model (463-platform). The latch in question matched the problematic part from the initial recall, prompting Mercedes to remove all remaining faulty parts from their inventory.

Scope of the Recall

By June 2024, a detailed analysis identified 134 G 550 and G 63 models in the U.S. that had been equipped with the defective latches. The impacted vehicles, produced between August 2018 and December 2022, will have recall notices sent to owners by September 30. The new and revised part number for the replacement door lock is A4637304202, replacing the flawed A4637309801.

Fixing the Fault

The dealer notification indicates that installing the new latch will take around 0.8 hours per vehicle. The process involves removing the door trim, replacing the central locking actuator, and re-installing the mounting screws, ensuring the doors function safely and securely.

Current G-Class Lineup and Pricing

The updated G-Class lineup includes the G 550 and the all-electric G 580 with EQ Technology, marking Mercedes’ first foray into electric off-roading. Despite a high starting price of $148,250 for the G 550, the G 580 sets a new standard with its four electric motors generating 579 horsepower and 859 lb-ft of torque. However, this model is even pricier, reflecting its advanced technology and performance capabilities.

Final Thoughts

Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to addressing these safety concerns underscores the importance of ongoing quality control and rapid response to defects. While the recall affects a relatively small number of vehicles, the consequences of a door unexpectedly opening on the road could be catastrophic, making this a critical fix for the iconic G-Class lineup.
