Lewis Hamilton, British driver of Mercedes AMG, took to the track with his Formula 1 car, the W15, during the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal on June 8, 2024. Mercedes is determined to bring improvements to their Formula 1 car in a way that surpasses the capabilities of their competitors. After a weak start to the season, Mercedes showed impressive speed and performance at the Canadian Grand Prix. Despite some mistakes, George Russell, Hamilton’s teammate, managed to secure pole position ahead of Max Verstappen from Red Bull. However, Russell dropped to third place during the race. Hamilton, on the other hand, had a challenging race and finished in fourth place, despite being the fastest driver in the third free practice session. James Allison, technical director of Mercedes, acknowledged that while losing a victory was disappointing, the team was excited to be back in competitive contention. The team’s recent success can be attributed to a revised front wing that was introduced in Monaco, which solved the balance issues they had been facing earlier in the season. Allison confirmed that the new part performed as expected based on their simulations.

“We had a couple of them in Montreal, and we had high hopes for their performance. We anticipated that it would stand out in Canada more than in Monaco, as the Canadian circuit, although unusual, is more typical compared to Monaco. It exceeded our expectations, improving the drivability and balance of the car, turning it into a driver-friendly machine. This has been a major challenge for us early in the season.

Russell was determined after the race, expressing his belief that the pace of the Mercedes was authentic and that they would now be in a position to challenge Red Bull on every track. However, Allison took a more cautious approach, warning that Mercedes does not expect the same level of strength it had in Canada on more traditional circuits.

“The modifications we have implemented are making this car better. This will be true at every circuit we visit,” he explained. “The characteristics of Montreal may have made it seem faster than what we naturally have the ability to achieve in the upcoming races. In Barcelona, it is more likely that we will be competitive, but not in the lead. The next tracks present a more rigorous test for the car, with hot asphalt and higher cornering speeds.”

However, the British engineer hinted that Mercedes would continue with an assertive strategy of introducing updates while striving to surpass their competitors. “However, I am also aware of what we have in store,” he continued. “I know what we have planned to further improve the car. Our challenge is to ensure that these updates arrive at a pace that surpasses the capabilities of our rivals. By doing this, our goal is to propel our car forward through the collective efforts of everyone involved here in the coming weeks and months, allowing it to perform as well as or even better than in Montreal at any future track we encounter.”
