Mercedes-Benz’s Formula 1 team has emerged from the first week of pre-season testing in Barcelona with a thunderous declaration: they are exceeding expectations! Andrew Shovlin, the Trackside Engineering Director, confidently announced that the Brackley-based squad is “ahead of where we hoped” as they gear up for the fiercely competitive 2023 season.
The team kicked off their testing on Monday, skipped Day Two, but returned to the circuit on Wednesday, showcasing an impressive performance that has left fans buzzing with excitement. While official lap times are under wraps, insiders report that the new W17 car, driven by the talented Andrea Kimi Antonelli, blazed through the day with a blistering time of 1:17.362, claiming the unofficial title of fastest car on the track!
What’s even more remarkable is the sheer mileage clocked by the team. Shovlin confirmed that the W17 completed a staggering 183 laps, with Antonelli contributing 91 and George Russell the remaining 92. While other teams grappled with mechanical failures and red flags, Mercedes demonstrated reliability and resilience, racking up over 300 laps across their two days of running – a feat that puts them ahead of the curve.
Shovlin elaborated on their progress, stating, “Mileage, we’re a bit ahead of where we hoped to be. So that’s good.” He highlighted how the car ran “faultlessly” on Wednesday, asserting that the only interruptions came from competitors’ breakdowns rather than issues on their side.
However, it’s not all smooth sailing just yet. The team is still fine-tuning their data collection processes, as many of their electrical systems are new. “We had a long list of objectives and if anything we’re slightly ahead of where we expected to be on Day Two,” Shovlin remarked, indicating that while they are on the right track, challenges remain.
As for the drivers, both Russell and Antonelli expressed satisfaction with the car’s performance, but Shovlin noted that their true happiness hinges on one crucial element: speed. “They’re happy with the car. It’s a nicer thing to drive than the previous regulations. It’s a bit lighter. It turns quite nicely for them. We’ve got a decent balance, low and high speed,” he said. Yet, the ultimate test will come when they push the limits on the track, with Shovlin predicting that the true potential of the W17 will be revealed as testing continues into Bahrain.
With a mix of optimism and realism, Mercedes is clearly laying the groundwork for a thrilling season ahead. Will their early successes translate into championship glory? As the drama unfolds, one thing is certain: the F1 world will be watching closely as Mercedes aims to reclaim their place at the pinnacle of motorsport!
