Mercedes-Benz has announced that it has improved the active parking assistant, allowing the system to park twice as fast as before, at 4 km/h.
“The driver can initiate the parking process through a digital button on the screen, and a status bar shows the progress”, Mercedes explained in a statement. During the automated parking, the system silences the audible signals from Parktronic. If the Mercedes is equipped with a 360° camera, the driver can choose different views while parking.
The vehicle continuously searches for parking spaces at speeds below 35 km/h and displays a blue “P” symbol on the driver’s screen.
Additionally, it can detect very tight parking spaces with only 50 centimeters of clearance on each side of the vehicle and uses white markings or parallel structures, such as sidewalks or other parked vehicles, for guidance.
When the Mercedes finds a space, a white arrow appears on the screen next to the “P” symbol. After engaging reverse gear, the driver can select the parking spot and initiate the automated parking process. For suitable perpendicular parking spots, the driver can choose to park head-in or reverse.
During automated parking, the vehicle responds to changes and ensures the safety of all road users. If the sensors detect vehicles crossing, cyclists, or pedestrians moving quickly while reversing from a parking spot, a visual and audible warning is issued. If the driver does not respond, the vehicle performs an autonomous emergency braking. This applies to both automated and manual reversing from perpendicular parking spaces.
These enhancements to the active parking assist come standard on the E-Class, S-Class, EQS, EQS SUV, EQE, EQE SUV, and all Maybach versions of these models with the parking package that includes a rearview camera; the 360° camera is available as an option.
