With the 2026 Formula 1 regulation overhaul looming, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff offers insights into the team’s progress and sets realistic expectations for rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli in 2025.
As Mercedes continues to navigate the transition from its early dominance in the ground-effect era, team principal Toto Wolff has shed light on the initial stages of development for the all-new 2026 Formula 1 chassis. Following a turbulent 2024 season marked by inconsistent performance, Wolff is keen to ensure Mercedes returns to championship contention when the next major regulation change takes effect.
A bumpy road in the ground-effect era
Mercedes has struggled to regain its footing since the ground-effect regulations came into play in 2022. Despite showing glimpses of brilliance, including some notable race wins in 2024, the team has consistently fallen short of its former dominance.
Wolff acknowledged these challenges but emphasized that the initial data from the factory for the 2026 chassis offers reasons for optimism.
“The first data for 2026 are coming out in the factory, and they are respecting some of the analyses we had previously done. This is good, but we are also pushing to reach other objectives,” Wolff explained.
However, the Austrian stressed the importance of setting ambitious standards. “It is all about understanding whether the expectations we have set are high enough,” he added.
2025: A transitional year for Mercedes
Next season will be pivotal for Mercedes as the team prepares for life without seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, who has departed for Ferrari. In his place, the highly touted 18-year-old Andrea Kimi Antonelli will make his full-time F1 debut.
Wolff has urged caution with Antonelli, tempering expectations for the Italian prodigy.
“If you expect him to be on pole position in Melbourne, win the race, and immediately run for the title, then the risk is high because it will not happen,” Wolff stated. “He is very talented, but he needs to grow up and make mistakes first.”
Antonelli vs. the competition
Antonelli’s arrival coincides with what could become an intense intra-team rivalry. While the team is positioning Antonelli as a long-term investment, he will share the garage with another rising star, whose own performance could dictate Mercedes’ future driver lineup.
The stakes are high, as Mercedes may use the 2025 season to evaluate its drivers ahead of a potential blockbuster move for Max Verstappen. With Verstappen’s dominance and proven track record, securing his services could redefine Mercedes’ trajectory.
The 2026 challenge
As the team focuses on the future, Wolff made it clear that the 2026 season is already a priority. Mercedes’ engineers are analyzing past shortcomings while pushing forward with innovative approaches for the new regulations.
Despite the challenges, Wolff remains confident in Mercedes’ ability to rise to the occasion. “The speed of development is good, but we need to ensure we are addressing all objectives and maintaining high expectations,” he said.
What lies ahead
While the 2025 season may serve as a transitional year for Mercedes, it also provides a crucial testing ground for Antonelli and the team’s evolving strategies. If the team can improve its pace and reliability from the outset, it will remain in contention as the championship battle heats up.
With an eye on 2026, Mercedes is laying the groundwork for a potential return to dominance. Whether Antonelli flourishes, a Verstappen move materializes, or the new chassis delivers as expected, one thing is clear: Mercedes is determined to reclaim its place at the top of Formula 1.
