Júnior da Mercedes in Formula 1, Doriane Pin will not be able to participate in the 2024 24 Hours of Le Mans due to fractured ribs. This injury will also interrupt her busy schedule of competing in single-seater races throughout the year.
The 20-year-old French driver is currently a strong contender in the all-female F1 Academy series, in addition to her participation in the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine and in some sports car races.
Pin was scheduled to compete in her second 24 Hours of Le Mans next month, but unfortunately will have to withdraw from the event due to the discovery of her fractured ribs.
“After undergoing medical examinations, it was determined that I have suffered rib fractures. These injuries require time to heal and, as a result, my team and I have made the difficult decision not to participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans,” explained Pin.
In addition to her sports car races and commitments to the F1 Academy, Pin recently made her debut in the FRECA series, which serves as an intermediate step between Formula 4 and Formula 3. She joined the Iron Dames team for this endeavor. Prior to this, she competed in the Southeast Asian and United Arab Emirates Formula 4 championships during the winter season, securing victories in both series.
Pin’s performance in the three FRECA races she has participated in so far has resulted in a best finish of 22nd place. However, she had to withdraw from the second race in Spa last weekend due to illness. It was during subsequent medical examinations that her fractured ribs were discovered, although the specific incident that caused the injury has not been disclosed.
In addition to missing Le Mans, Pin confirmed that she will also not be able to compete in the third round of FRECA in Zandvoort, which takes place the week before the endurance race.
“It is a very difficult and disappointing situation, especially regarding Le Mans. It is one of the most important races of the year and has a special place in my heart,” expressed Pin.
“I was looking forward to the opportunity to compete there and share this experience with all of you and my team. However, I must prioritize my well-being and also consider the interests of the Iron Dames.”
Pin joined the Mercedes F1 junior program before making her debut in the all-female F1 Academy in 2024. She made a strong impression during the season opening weekend in Saudi Arabia, narrowly missing out on a double victory due to crossing the finish line twice incorrectly in the second race.
In the second round in Miami, Pin secured a second and third place, putting her in second position in the championship standings, behind current leader Abbi Pulling, who is supported by Alpine.
The third round of the F1 Academy season, which uses Formula 4 cars, is scheduled to coincide with the Spanish Grand Prix in Catalunya next month.
Pin expressed her intention to return to compete in this event, indicating that her campaign in the F1 Academy will not be significantly affected by her current injury.
