Mercedes F1 Chief Toto Wolff Reveals Shocking Truth Behind Kimi Antonelli’s Performance Plummet
ADVERTISEMENT

Toto Wolff, the formidable leader of Mercedes F1, has finally shed light on the alarming decline of rookie sensation Kimi Antonelli, who has seen his meteoric rise take a sharp nosedive in recent races. The 18-year-old Italian, who replaced the legendary Lewis Hamilton for the 2025 season, burst onto the scene with an electrifying comeback from 16th to 4th place during his debut at the Australian Grand Prix. Fans were thrilled as he followed that with a string of top-six finishes, but the excitement turned to dismay after his disastrous DNF at the Emilia Romagna GP, where he disappointed his home crowd.

Since that fateful race, Antonelli has managed to secure a meager 16 points across seven outings, with the bulk of his points—save for a stunning podium finish in Canada—vanishing like smoke. Despite this slump, Wolff remains steadfast in his belief that Antonelli is a diamond in the rough, expressing unwavering confidence in the young driver’s potential. In a candid interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Wolff proclaimed, “Kimi is a huge talent: he’s fast, he’s intelligent, but he’s very young. I said it right from the start: he’ll make mistakes, we know that, and we wouldn’t have taken him on if we weren’t aware of that.”

However, the Mercedes chief didn’t shy away from acknowledging the team’s role in Antonelli’s struggles, lamenting, “Unfortunately, we have an inconsistent car, which makes it more difficult for him to adapt. But going through these difficulties is also part of the process of becoming a champion.” Indeed, the inconsistent performance of the car has turned the learning curve into a steep uphill battle for the rookie.

Currently languishing in seventh place in the drivers’ standings and trailing over 100 points behind teammate George Russell, Antonelli’s future at Mercedes hangs precariously in the balance, especially with both drivers’ contracts set to expire at the end of the year. Speculation has been rampant regarding potential replacements, particularly in light of Max Verstappen’s uncertain future at Red Bull. Wolff has repeatedly denied intentions to replace either driver, but as the countdown to the final ten grands prix of 2025 begins, the pressure is mounting.

In the cutthroat world of Formula 1, where every race is a high-stakes gamble, Kimi Antonelli’s journey serves as a sobering reminder of the challenges that come with immense talent and expectation. Will he rise from the ashes of his recent misfortunes, or will the weight of the Silver Arrows become too heavy to bear? The F1 world watches with bated breath.
