As the 2025 Formula 1 season revs up, George Russell stands firm at the helm of team Mercedes, with the legendary Lewis Hamilton’s absence echoing in the pit lanes. This year’s championship race marks a significant change for Mercedes, the first since 2012 without Hamilton, who sealed six Drivers’ Championships and 84 victories under their banner.

Mercedes’ top boss, Toto Wolff, acknowledges the pre-season has been atypical without Hamilton, who has now swapped his silver arrow for a prancing horse at Ferrari. While the Briton’s departure has left a noticeable void, it has also thrust George Russell into a central role, steering the team forward alongside new rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

Russell candidly admitted the atmosphere in the team has undeniably shifted. However, he was quick to underline that Mercedes is firmly focused on the horizon, not the rear-view mirror. Speaking at pre-season testing in Bahrain, Russell stated, “It does feel different without Lewis, who is a colossal figure both on and off the track. But the team is buzzing with anticipation for the next chapter. We cherish the memories, but we’re all eager to carve out new ones.”

Russell’s three-year stint as Hamilton’s team-mate has shaped him into a formidable contender, enabling him to learn from and compete directly against the F1 titan. “It’s like closing one book and opening another,” Russell reflected, adding, “We at Mercedes are all about looking forward, not backward.”

As the season gears up, all eyes will also be on Mercedes’ new recruit, Kimi Antonelli. Russell, who now shares the grid with this young talent, is convinced Antonelli has the speed to challenge him right from the starting line.

Russell expressed his faith in his new team-mate, saying, “Every front-runner in Formula 1 has been a rookie once. They all began with that unwavering self-belief. I see that in Kimi. Talent and speed are inherent, and you either have it or you don’t. Experience comes with time.”

Russell is confident that Antonelli, who racked up over 10,000 kilometres in F1 cars before his debut, will keep him on his toes. “I’m sure Kimi and I will be pushing each other to the limit, and that’s going to make this season all the more exciting.”

As Mercedes embarks on this new journey without their star driver Lewis Hamilton, it’s clear that Russell and Antonelli are fired up to steer the team back into championship contention. No looking back, just full speed ahead.
