Mercedes-Benz is about to launch the updated version of the EQS and has already revealed one of the main innovations: the introduction of steer-by-wire technology, an unprecedented solution in a production model from a European manufacturer.
Steering without direct mechanical connection
The new system eliminates the traditional physical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels, replacing it with advanced electronic control. This technology allows for more precise and adaptive steering, automatically adjusting behavior according to driving conditions.
According to the brand, the system has been extensively tested, accumulating around one million kilometers in different scenarios, including road, track, and simulations.
New “yoke” steering wheel changes the onboard experience
The debut of steer-by-wire is accompanied by a new “yoke” steering wheel, lacking the top part of the rim. This shape opens up the field of vision for the instrument panel and contributes to a feeling of greater space in the cabin.
Despite the different design, the steering wheel retains integrated controls and includes an airbag, which has been redesigned to function without the traditional closed rim structure.
More comfort and ease of driving
Mercedes highlights several advantages of the new system:
- Reduction of the effort required to turn
- Elimination of the need to cross hands on the steering wheel
- Greater ease in maneuvers and parking
- Less transmission of vibrations on uneven surfaces
The system takes advantage of rear-wheel steering and specific interventions from the stability control, allowing for more effective lateral control.
Safety guaranteed with redundant system
To ensure reliability, the technology integrates multiple sensors and redundant control units, guaranteeing operation even in the event of a component failure.
Launch expected soon
The renewed version of the EQS is expected to hit the market in the second half of the year, although Mercedes has not yet revealed the price of the new technology.
Currently, the EQS is available in several versions, including 450+, 450 4Matic, and 580 4Matic, with ranges of up to about 627 km and power outputs exceeding 350 hp.
An important step in the evolution of driving
With the introduction of steer-by-wire, Mercedes-Benz strengthens its commitment to technological innovation, proposing a new approach to driving that could redefine the interaction between driver and vehicle in the coming years.
