A crisis meeting was held at Brackley with Russell and Antonelli to address the issues plaguing the W16 before Budapest. Following a promising victory at the Canadian Grand Prix, Mercedes saw a downturn in performance, with Russell and rookie Antonelli struggling to replicate their earlier success. This led to a deep dive into the car’s instability issues, particularly in the rear, caused by recent updates to the W16.

The Technical Director, Andrew Shovlin, acknowledged the need to revert to a more stable setup after changes made throughout the season. Russell pointed towards FIA restrictions on flexible front wings as a possible cause for Mercedes’ struggles, but Shovlin emphasized the need to analyze all recent design changes thoroughly. The emergency meeting aimed to pinpoint and rectify Mercedes’ mistakes ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Shovlin highlighted the challenges Antonelli faced at Spa-Francorchamps, emphasizing the importance of resolving the issues promptly. The team is determined to make necessary modifications to enhance performance moving forward, with a focus on strategic design changes. Stay tuned as Mercedes fights to reclaim its dominance on the F1 circuit!
