Mercedes Boss Toto Wolff’s Unwavering Interest in Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari Debut: A Tale of F1 Rivalry and Respect

2025 Australian Grand Prix, Thursday - Giacomo Crapanzano

In an unexpected twist during the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff was spotted closely monitoring the performance of his former star, Lewis Hamilton, despite his recent move to rival team Ferrari. This marked the first Grand Prix where Hamilton and Mercedes faced off as competitors rather than teammates, a position they hadn’t been in since 2012.

Wolff and Hamilton had both joined the illustrious Mercedes team in 2013, sparking a record-breaking partnership that lasted a remarkable 12 seasons. At the recent Grand Prix, Wolff confessed that he had felt as though he was simultaneously managing three drivers, given the amount of attention he was paying to Hamilton’s progress.

“While observing the performance metrics, I found myself frequently checking in on RUS, ANT, and HAM,” Wolff admitted. His revelation underscores the enduring bond between Hamilton and Mercedes, and the difficulty in adjusting to Hamilton’s absence. “It was a jarring realization to remember that HAM is now competing for Ferrari and no longer part of our team.”

Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes has left a palpable void, but Wolff was quick to emphasize that the team still holds a deep-rooted respect and regard for the seven-time champion. “Given the length of his tenure with us, it’s only natural that we continue to care about his performance,” Wolff stated. However, he was quick to clarify that while they wish Hamilton well, on the track, he is now the competition they aim to surpass.

As for Hamilton’s replacement, 18-year-old Andrea Kimi Antonelli stepped up to the plate with remarkable poise and skill. Despite being a newcomer to the world of Formula 1, the young Italian prodigy managed an impressive fourth place finish in Australia, starting from the 16th position.

Hamilton was seen supporting Antonelli throughout the Australian Grand Prix weekend, demonstrating his class not just as a driver, but also as a person. “Witnessing this young talent thrive fills me with joy,” Hamilton commented during a press conference. “He’s performed exceptionally well and has conducted himself with the utmost professionalism. It’s a special moment to see him take his first steps in Formula 1, and I can empathize with the years of dedication it would have taken him to get here.”

Antonelli reciprocated this sentiment, expressing his gratitude for Hamilton’s support. “His unwavering support stands testament to his greatness, both on and off the track,” Antonelli said.

As the Grand Prix season progresses, Mercedes, led by Toto Wolff, would aim to outshine Lewis Hamilton, now their competitor at Ferrari. The dynamic shift is indicative of the capricious nature of the sport, and fans worldwide are eager to see how this gripping narrative unfolds.
