Just four months remain before Lewis Hamilton, the F1 star, bids farewell to Mercedes and embarks on a new journey with Ferrari. Hamilton, with a highly illustrious career in Formula 1, has found it impossible to continue without Mercedes. After a decade with the team, he will now leave his home and join Ferrari in 2025. Andrew Shovlin, Mercedes’ trackside engineering director, recently shared what he will miss about Hamilton, the successor to the Mercedes throne, once he departs.

Shovlin emphasized that working with Lewis Hamilton has been a remarkable experience. The British driver’s presence at Silver Arrows has been nothing short of extraordinary, and Shovlin will miss his unique personality and the valuable insights he provided. Hamilton’s exceptional race pace aside, his contributions extended beyond mere speed. He possessed a deep understanding of the car’s requirements and effectively communicated what changes were necessary for optimal performance.

According to Shovlin, Hamilton’s ability to identify weaknesses in the car was exceptional. From an engineering standpoint, it is difficult to pinpoint exactly what will be missed. Hamilton’s talent for problem-solving and providing detailed feedback has been invaluable. He never put the engineers in a tough spot and always knew precisely what improvements the car needed. Without him, gathering such precise and useful information about the cars would have been a greater challenge, making his absence’s impact on engineering hard to measure.

Shovlin acknowledged that had Mercedes been winning championships, it would have been much harder for Hamilton to leave the team. However, Shovlin believes that Hamilton’s decision to move on was motivated by more than just the car’s performance. He sought a new challenge and a different experience in his career, even after a highly successful stint with Mercedes. Choosing Ferrari as his next chapter, Hamilton expressed a keen interest in exploring new opportunities rather than solely addressing any car-related issues.

While it is true that Mercedes’ decline in performance in recent years may have influenced Hamilton’s decision, Shovlin clarified that his reasons for departing were more diverse. Therefore, the British driver did not leave Mercedes due to any issues with the car, as some fans speculated.
