Mercedes-Benz caught more than 1.6 million counterfeits in 2023.

Lucros da Mercedes-Benz recuam 24,6% no primeiro trimestre

The automotive industry brands have never taken on the fight against product counterfeiting on a global level as they do now.

Recently, Ferrari announced that they destroyed over 400,000 counterfeits in 2023, and now Mercedes-Benz has announced that authorities seized over 1.6 million counterfeit parts of the German brand in over 740 operations worldwide last year. This is a 20% increase compared to 2022.

These raids are often preceded by months of investigation and preparation. Mercedes-Benz’s investigative teams check offers on websites, investigate signs of counterfeiting, and conduct intensive research to identify counterfeit factories.

The results are later provided to the authorities responsible for conducting the raids. However, detecting product counterfeits reliably requires a well-trained eye and many years of experience because often the counterfeits are difficult to distinguish from genuine ones.

Throughout the world, an average of more than two raids are carried out daily by commercial supervisory and law enforcement authorities on counterfeit Mercedes-Benz parts.

“The counterfeiting industry generates huge profits and has organized crime structures. In addition, it jeopardizes road safety, disregards the environment, and does not advocate for fair wages or occupational safety. There is no quality control. By consistently taking action against these highly criminal structures using all legal means, we not only protect the reputation of our brand, but also our customers, road users, and all victims of the counterfeit industry,” said Renata Jungo Brüngger, member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG for Integrity, Governance, and Sustainability.

To avoid purchasing counterfeit products, Mercedes-Benz reminds that there are typical warning signs to identify counterfeit products, such as “significantly lower prices, product quality anomalies, or sales through dubious websites.”

In some cases, it is immediately visible in the product images or designations that they cannot be genuine, for example, if Mercedes-Benz does not manufacture these products itself.

However, if you have doubts about Mercedes-Benz parts, it is best to consult an expert because a layperson will hardly be able to visually distinguish many of the offers of genuine products.
